Mellon lifts DeSales volleyball team
to sweep at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN(Oct. 24, 2006) – Freshman outside hitter Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) collected 11 kills, 12 assists, three service aces and seven digs to lead the DeSales University women’s volleyball team to a three-game sweep over Rutgers University-Camden in a non-conference match here Tuesday.

DeSales won by scores of 30-17, 31-29 and 30-24.

The Bulldogs improve to 10-19, snapping a three-match losing streak.

Rutgers-Camden closes its season with a 6-17 record.

DeSales also received 15 assists, two aces and five digs from junior Gia Zimmerman (Blandon, PA/Reading Central Catholic), while sophomore Rachel Koury (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) notched 10 digs. Juniors Molly Motley (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic) and Allie Boyer (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) collected seven and six kills, respectively.

For the Lady Raptors, freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected 16 kills, one ace, 12 digs and five solo blocks, while junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) notched 21 digs, two blocks, 18 assists and five kills. Freshmen Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central), Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) each had three kills. Powell added seven assists and 19 digs, while Pohorely had four aces, 15 digs and one assist. Linen added two digs.

Sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had 28 digs, two aces and one kill and sophomore Kathleen Dreitlein (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) added three solo blocks.

Neumann, Widener sweep
Rutgers-Camden in tri-match

CHESTER, Penn. (Oct. 21, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches here Saturday as they were swept by both Neumann College and host Widener University in a tri-match.

The Lady Raptors lost to Neumann, 14-30, 27-30, 16-30, and then were swept by Widener, 11-30, 26-30, 19-30. In the third match of the day, Neumann outlasted Widener in five games.

Rutgers-Camden, which fell to 6-16 with its 11th loss in 12 matches, received 23 digs from sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) in its loss to Neumann. Junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had nine kills, 13 assists, 14 digs and two solo blocks, while freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshmen Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 10 and 16 digs, respectively, while each adding four kills. Pohorely, Powell and Polite each added two service aces. Freshman Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added two kills and five digs.

In the loss to Widener, Grochowski had seven kills, 15 assists, two aces, 14 digs and one block, while Polite notched nine kills, two aces, two blocks and 18 digs. Powell had 19 digs, one block, four kills and two aces and Pohorely added three kills, three aces, one block and 12 digs. Cosico notched a team-high 20 digs and four service aces and Linen collected two kills, 10 digs and one block.

With 11 solo blocks on the day, the Raptors raised their team mark to 208, passing the old single-season program record of 198 set in 2002.

The Raptors play their match of the season Tuesday night when they entertain DeSales University at 7 p.m.


Rutgers
-Camden snaps skid
with sweep over Chestnut Hill

CAMDEN (Oct. 19, 2006) – Junior setter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had eight kills, 26 assists, 20 digs and two solo blocks to power the Rutgers University-Camden women’s volleyball team over Chestnut Hill College, 3-0, in a non-conference match here Thursday.

The Lady Raptors won by scores of 30-23, 30-17 and 30-21 to snap a nine-match losing streak.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 6-14 overall, while Chestnut Hill falls to 6-15.

The Raptors rallied from an 11-3 deficit in the opening game, finally taking the lead for good at 16-15. In the second game, with Chestnut Hill taking an early 5-3 lead, Rutgers-Camden bounced back to take the lead for good behind the strong serving of freshman middle/outside hitter Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central), who finished the game with five kills, four aces and 11 digs.

Rutgers-Camden built a big lead in the third game and closed out the sweep.

Freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected five kills and 12 digs, while freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added four kills, 12 assists and 20 digs.

Freshman opposite Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) also had a strong match, collecting five kills, two service aces and six digs, while sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) notched a match-high 22 digs and added one service ace. Sophomore outside hitter Kathleen Dreitlein (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston), playing in only her fourth match since joining the team, led the Raptors with five solo blocks, while adding two kills.

For the Griffins, junior outside hitter Lisa Doria (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) collected eight kills, five aces, 11 digs and four blocks, while sophomore middle hitter Marianne Finfrock (Havertown, PA/Havertown) had seven kills, four aces, 13 digs, one block and one assist.

Freshman setter Kimberly Paynter (Philadelphia, PA/HS of Creative & Performing Arts) had nine assists, seven digs and one kill.

The Raptors return to action Saturday with a tri-match at Widener University. They face Neumann College at noon and Widener at 2 p.m.

Chestnut Hill College hosts a tri-match Saturday with Polytechnic and Penn State-Berks, beginning at 11 a.m.

 

Cintron, NJCU volleyball team
sweep past Rutgers-Camden

JERSEY CITY (Oct. 17, 2006) – Junior middle blocker Lizzelle Cintron (Newark, NJ/Elizabeth) planted 18 kills and hit .727 to move into 17th place in Division III history in kills, and sophomore setter Sofia Gutierrez (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) delivered 17 assists to reach the 2,000-plateau for her career, as the New Jersey City University volleyball team swept Rutgers University-Camden, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Tuesday night.

The Gothic Knights extended their home court winning streak to 28 consecutive matches, winning by scores of 30-15, 30-12, 30-25.
NJCU, ranked No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improves to 26-6 overall and 6-1 in the NJAC, winning for the 14th time in the last 15 matches and the fifth match in a row.

The Scarlet Raptors dip to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the NJAC with their ninth consecutive defeat. Rutgers-Camden is 0-13 all-time against NJCU, with all matches being 3-0 sweeps.

Cintron, who has dominated the NJAC Player of the Week awards this season by winning five of the seven honors, entered the match with 2,022 kills in her career. She vaulted past three players into 17th place in Division III history with 2,040 kills. She passed Adrian’s Lauree Dermyer (2,025 kills, 2001-04), Capital University’s Nici Workman (2,026 kills, 2000-03), and SUNY-New Paltz’ Belgica Santana(2,027 kills, 1997-99) on the all-time list in the match. She is one kill shy of a tie for 16th place.

Camden received a team-high 11 kills (11-5-22), two aces and a .273 percentage from freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Junior setter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 13 assists, six kills (6-3-14, .214), five digs, and two solo blocks.

The Raptors return to action Thursday when they host Chestnut Hill College in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.

 

Rutgers-Camden volleyball loses tri-match
to Rutgers-Newark, College of Notre Dame

CAMDEN (Oct. 14, 2006) – The Rutgers-Newark women’s volleyball team raised its record to 19-7 as it swept past Rutgers University-Camden and the College of Notre Dame in a tri-match here Saturday.

The Scarlet Raiders swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-10, 30-28, 30-20, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match to improve to 5-2 in the NJAC.  Rutgers-Newark completed its day by sweeping the College of Notre Dame, 30-18, 30-28, 30-6.

In the third match of the day, the College of Notre Dame swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-28, 30-23, 30-19 to raise its record to 11-17.

Rutgers-Camden, which has lost eight straight matches, dips to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the NJAC.

In the opening match, Newark received 13 kills and nine digs from freshman outside hitter Katlyn Lewis (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) in its sweep over Rutgers-Camden. Junior middle hitter Julie Pape (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin Senior) added eight kills and four service aces, while freshman outside hitter Jesica Cockerham (Keller, TX/Fossil Ridge) had 11 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Nazly Hasanizadeh (Katy, TX/Alief Hastings) notched 19 assists for the Scarlet Raiders and senior libero Jessica Kleeman (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) notched 13 digs.

For Rutgers-Camden, freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and freshman outside hitter Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) each collected six kills, while sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) added 13 digs and freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) notched 11 digs and five assists. Junior outside hitter/setter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected four kills, 13 assists, nine digs and two blocks. Freshman opposite Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added two kills and eight digs.

In its win over Notre Dame, Newark received 10 kills apiece from Lewis and freshman middle hitter Rachel Guyt (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley). Hasanizadeh added 30 assists and 14 digs, while Lewis had 13 digs.

In their loss to Notre Dame, the Lady Raptors saw Pohorely notch seven kills and nine digs, while Cosico had 18 digs, Grochowski had 14 digs, 22 assists and four kills and Powell added two kills, nine assists, three aces and 12 digs. Polite had five kills, five aces, 10 digs and two blocks, while Linen added one kill, four digs and one block.

During the two matches, the Scarlet Raptors broke single-season program records, set in 2004, for kills (571) and assists (542). With their statistics Saturday, the 2006 team raised those single-season standards to 613 kills and 546 assists. They also tied the 2004 single-season club record of 225 service aces.

Rutgers-Camden travels to Jersey City Tuesday night to battle NJAC powerhouse New Jersey City University in a 7 p.m. match.

Ramapo sweeps Rutgers-Camden
in NJAC volleyball match

CAMDEN (Oct. 12, 2006) – Junior setter Ashley Cornett (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) notched 17 assists, seven digs and two kills to power the Ramapo College volleyball team to a three-game sweep over Rutgers University-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference action here Thursday night. The Roadrunners won by scores of 30-22, 30-17 and 30-19.

Ramapo, which is 6-0 in the all-time series against Rutgers-Camden, improves to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the NJAC with its fifth win in the last seven matches. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost six straight matches, dips to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.

Freshman opposite Kaitlin Smith (Westwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) collected six kills and four digs for the Roadrunners, while sophomore outside hitter Rochelle Kizhnerman (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) had six kills and 11 digs.

For the Scarlet Raptors, freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) notched nine kills, four blocks and six digs. Freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had five kills and 12 digs, while junior outside hitter/setter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected seven kills, 20 assists, two blocks and 13 digs.

Sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) added 11 digs and six assists.

Rutgers-Camden hosts its own tri-match Saturday, which includes Rutgers-Newark and the College of Notre Dame. The Raptors face Rutgers-Newark in a conference match at 1 p.m., followed by Rutgers-Newark against the College of Notre Dame at 3 p.m. The tri-match closes with Rutgers-Camden battling the College of Notre Dame at 5 p.m.

Ramapo will play its alumni game at noon Saturday. The Roadrunners return to intercollegiate action when they host Rowan University in a 7:30 p.m. NJAC match Tuesday.

 

Kean sweeps Rutgers-Camden
in NJAC volleyball match

UNION (Oct. 10, 2006) – Kean University freshman setter Colleen Masterson (Rahway, NJ/Roselle Catholic) returned to the Cougar lineup and tallied a match-high 27 assists as the Kean defeated Rutgers-Camden in straight games (32-30, 30-15, 30-21) in New Jersey Athletic Conference volleyball action here Tuesday evening. 

The victory improved the Cougars to 11-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the NJAC.

 Masterson, playing for the first time since September 26, added four kills, four service aces and five digs as the Cougars snapped a losing streak which had stretched to seven matches while she was out with an injury.

In the win, senior outside hitter Elizabeth Bauer (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) led the Cougars with 12 kills and 10 digs, while junior Alicja Ciastoch (Teaneck, NJ/Immaculate Conception) added seven kills, eight digs and three service aces.  Junior Corinne O’Toole (Garfield, NJ/Garfield) had a strong match, as she contributed six kills, five service aces, four digs and two solo blocks.

 For the Scarlet Raptors, freshman middle hitters Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and  Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) each had five kills, while Powell had a team-high nine digs and Polite added eight digs and three solo blocks.  Sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had eight assists and seven digs for Rutgers-Camden.

Rutgers-Camden hosts Ramapo College Thursday at 7 p.m. in another NJAC match.

Rutgers-Camden loses tri-match
to College of Notre Dame, Goucher

BALTIMORE, Maryland (Oct. 8, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team dropped a pair of matches here Sunday as it fell to the College of Notre Dame, 3-2, and to host Goucher College, 3-0, in non-conference action.

The Scarlet Raptors, who have dropped four consecutive matches, fall to 5-9.

Rutgers-Camden rallied from a two-game deficit only to lose in the decisive fifth game against Maryland’s College of Notre Dame, 19-30, 24-30, 30-22, 30-27, 6-15. The Lady Raptors were swept by Goucher, 18-30, 23-30, 17-30.

Goucher also swept the College of Notre Dame, 31-29, 30-21, 30-23.

In the five-game loss to the College of Notre Dame, Rutgers-Camden freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected 20 kills, nine blocks and 15 digs, while junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 14 kills, 25 digs and 20 assists. Sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) contributed nine kills, 18 assists and 18 digs.

In the sweep by Goucher, Grochowski and Cosico each had nine digs to lead the Lady Raptors. Grochowski also added nine kills and 12 assists, while Cosico had eight assists and Polite notched six kills and five blocks. Freshman Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had four service aces.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference match at Kean University.

Rowan tops Rutgers-Camden
in NJAC volleyball action

CAMDEN (Oct. 3, 2006) – Freshman Karen Ramirez (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) collected 14 kills, 16 digs and eight service aces and sophomore Alexis Louie (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) added 14 kills and 15 digs to power the Rowan University volleyball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 30-28, 30-27, 28-30, 30-22, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Tuesday.

Rowan improves to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 5-7 and 1-3.

The Profs also received 32 assists from freshman Chrissy McKay (Paramus, NJ/Paramus), while junior Theresa Pecoraro (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) added 14 digs, five kills and three service aces.

For Rutgers-Camden, freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected 26 kills, 15 digs and five blocks, while junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 24 digs, 21 kills and four blocks.

Freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had 52 assists, breaking the school mark of 51 she set Sept. 26 at William Paterson University. She also added 12 digs.

Freshman Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added 20 digs and eight kills, while sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) collected 19 digs and six kills.

Both teams return to action with non-conference games this weekend. Rowan hosts Immaculata University at 1 p.m. Saturday. Rutgers-Camden travels to Baltimore Sunday for a tri-match at Goucher College. The Lady Raptors face the College of Notre Dame at 1 p.m. and play the host Gophers at 3 p.m.


Rutgers-Camden sets program records

in volleyball split at Cabrini College

RADNOR, Penn (Sept. 30, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team set a school single-season record with its fifth win of the year as it split a pair of non-conference matches at Cabrini College here Saturday.

The Raptors swept Kean University, 30-25, 31-29, 30-19, in a match which didn’t count toward the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings. In doing so, Rutgers-Camden won its fifth match of the year to break the old program mark set by the 4-18 team of 2003. That win also gave the Raptors a school-record three-match winning streak.

Rutgers-Camden’s streak was broken in a 3-1 loss to host Cabrini later in the afternoon. Cabrini, which also swept Kean and improved to 10-7 with its sixth straight win, beat the Raptors by scores of 30-16, 30-21, 25-30, 30-12.

Rutgers-Camden stands at 5-6, while Kean is 10-6.

In the match against Kean, freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) notched 10 kills, five aces, nine digs and three blocks, while freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had 18 assists, six aces and 15 digs. Freshman Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added seven service aces and six digs.

In the match against Cabrini, junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected 13 kills and seven digs, while Polite had seven kills, eight blocks and six digs. Lo led the Raptors with nine digs and sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had eight digs and 24 assists. Freshman Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) notched five aces and five digs, while freshman Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Powell each added four kills.

The Lady Raptors return to action Tuesday when they entertain Rowan University in a 7 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference match.

Rutgers-Camden ties program win mark
in five-game victory at Bryn Athyn College

BRYN ATHYN, Penn. (Sept. 27, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team continued to make program history win a five-game victory here Wednesday night at Bryn Athyn College of the New Church.

The Raptors outlasted Bryn Athyn, 30-21, 30-27, 24-30, 28-30, 15-10, to raise their record to 4-5. The four victories ties Rutgers-Camden’s single-season program mark, set during the Raptors’ 4-18 campaign in 2003. Coupled with a five-game win over William Paterson on Tuesday night, it also gave the Lady Raptors a two-match winning streak for the second time this season. Entering the year, Rutgers-Camden had won back-to-back matches only once in program history, on Oct. 20 and 22, 2005.

For the second consecutive day, freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) hit the 50-assist plateau, notching 50 exactly to finish one shy of the club record she set against William Paterson University Tuesday night.

Freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) collected 20 kills, four aces, six digs and four blocks, while junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage.

Freshman Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) added 11 kills and four aces, while sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) notched 10 digs.

As a team, the Lady Raptors set a program single-match record with 63 kills, five more than the total against Paterson Tuesday.
The Raptors return to action Saturday when they play a pair of matches at Cabrini College. Rutgers-Camden faces Kean University at 1 p.m. and Cabrini College at 3 p.m.


Rutgers-Camden volleyball team

sets history with first NJAC win

WAYNE (Sept. 26, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team rallied from a two-game deficit to make program history here Tuesday night.

The Scarlet Raptors defeated host William Paterson University, 26-30, 23-30, 33-31, 30-25, 15-12 to record their first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory in program history.

Rutgers-Camden, 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC, entered the evening with a 0-32 all-time record in NJAC matches. All but three of those matches were three-game sweeps and last week, for the first time in program history, Rutgers-Camden won two NJAC games in the same match during a 3-2 loss to Montclair State University (Sept. 21).

The Raptors’ historical night started with a pair of losses before they outlasted the Pioneers, 33-31, in the third game. They evened the match at two games apiece with a 30-25 win, then took the deciding contest, 15-12.

Rutgers-Camden was paced by junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), who collected 17 kills, seven digs, five blocks and three service aces. Freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) added 13 kills, two digs and four blocks. Grochowski and Polite helped the Raptors tie a program single five-game match team record with 58 kills. They tied the mark set against Chestnut Hill College Oct. 26, 2005.

Freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), meanwhile, set a single-match club record with 51 assists to pass the old mark of 43 by Karla Maisto in a four-game match against the College of St. Elizabeth (Oct. 15, 2005). Her output also helped the Raptors set a team mark with 56 assists, breaking their mark of 50 set against Chestnut Hill College in a five-game match Oct. 26, 2005.

Freshmen Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) added 10 and nine kills, respectively.

For the Pioneers (4-11 overall, 0-4 NJAC), junior outside hitter Michelle Banom (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) posted a team-best 22 kills, while junior setter Dana Hansen (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) added 41 assists and 13 digs.

The Raptors return to action Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Bryn Athyn College of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Penn.

but Raptors fall to Bryn Mawr College

CAMDEN (Sept. 23, 2006) – Rutgers University-Camden freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) set a program record with 17 blocks and the Scarlet Raptors set a team mark with 32 blocks, but the Bryn Mawr College volleyball team rallied to post a 21-30, 30-20, 30-23 and 30-25 victory in a non-conference match here Saturday.

Bryn Mawr improves to 7-5, snapping a two-match losing streak. Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-5 with its third straight defeat.

Polite had 17 blocks to pass the old program mark of 13, set by Joy Silver against Stevens Tech Sept. 21, 2002. She also added 15 kills, nine digs and four service aces.

Junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected 12 blocks, 13 kills and 19 digs, helping the Raptors set the program team record of 32 blocks. The old mark was 24 in a five-game match against Montclair State on Thursday. The old four-game match record was 22 against Valley Forge Christian Oct. 21, 2004.

The Raptors also received 20 digs and seven kills from sophomore Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and 32 assists from freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West). Lo added a team-high five aces.

The Raptors return to action Tuesday when they play a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at William Paterson University, beginning at 7 p.m.

Montclair State outlasts Rutgers-Camden
in five-game NJAC volleyball match

CAMDEN (Sept. 21, 2006) – The Montclair State University women’s volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak here Thursday night as the Red Hawks outlasted Rutgers University-Camden, 30-26, 26-30, 30-19, 21-30, 15-9, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
Montclair State improves to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-4 and 0-2.

The Red Hawks were paced by a group of freshmen as Raisa Silva (Newark, NJ/East Side) notched 42 assists,  Meghan Stevens (Woodcliff, NJ/Pascack Hills) had 30 digs, Anna Chesnakova (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) collected 11 kills and seven blocks, Kara Burnham (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) notched 10 kills and Karin Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Washington Township) had 10 kills and 18 digs.

Rutgers-Camden, which is 0-32 in its NJAC volleyball history, marked the first time it had won a pair of games in one NJAC match. That doubled the Raptors’ NJAC victory total to four games over the program’s history.

Leading the way for the Raptors were freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) with nine and seven blocks, respectively.

Montclair State plays at York (PA) College’s Best Western Westgate Tournament Friday and Saturday. Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts Bryn Mawr College in a 12 p.m. non-conference match.

Stockton sweeps Rutgers-Camden
in Raptors’ NJAC volleyball opener

POMONA (Sept. 19, 2006) – Richard Stockton College won its sixth consecutive volleyball match as it swept Rutgers University-Camden, 30-28, 30-17 and 30-13, in the Scarlet Raptors’ New Jersey Athletic Conference opener here Tuesday night.

Stockton improves to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden, which saw its two-match winning streak snapped, falls to 2-3 and 0-1.

Amanda Burkart (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill)
and Nicole Williams (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) each collected 10 kills and four aces for the Ospreys. Christine Aletras (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) collected 31 assists and eight digs, while Colleen Bachmann (Clouster, NJ/Northern Valley) added a team-high 12 digs.

Rutgers-Camden received seven kills and two service aces from freshman Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Freshman Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) notched six blocks and five kills, while freshman Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had 23 assists. Junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had six kills, six digs and two blocks.

The first game was tied at 23 until Stockton scored three straight points to take the lead for good, 26-23. The Ospreys jumped to leads of 19-11 and 10-4 in games two and three, respectively.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Thursday when it entertains Montclair State University at 6 p.m. in another NJAC match.

Rutgers-Camden volleyball sets
program history with victory

CAMDEN (Sept. 16, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team climbed to .500 for the first time in program history as the Scarlet Raptors swept Immaculata University, 30-24, 30-20 and 30-18, in a non-conference match here Saturday.

The victory leaves the Raptors with a 2-2 record, marking the first time since the program started in 2000 that Rutgers-Camden has reached .500. Coupled with their previous win over Valley Forge Christian Sept. 5, the Raptors also tied their program-record winning streak at two.

The only other time that was accomplished in program history was Oct. 20 and 22, 2005.

It was a big day all around for first-year coach Carl Taylor’s team. Rutgers-Camden established program three-game match records for most team kills (41) and most assists (31). The team also barely missed its three-game match records of 22 aces and 18 blocks, falling one short in each category. Rutgers-Camden also set a match record with a team hitting percentage of .337.

Leading the way for the Raptors was junior outside hitter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), who had 13 kills, six digs and two blocks. Freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) added 12 kills, four digs and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) notched a team-high 15 digs and freshman setter Julie Lo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had 27 assists and 10 digs.

Freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected eight kills, five digs and a team-high seven service aces.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday with its New Jersey Athletic Conference opener at Richard Stockton College. The match starts at 7 p.m

Taylor notches first victory
with Rutgers-Camden volleyball

CAMDEN (Sept. 5, 2006) – First-year Rutgers University-Camden volleyball coach Carl Taylor notched his first victory as the Lady Raptors defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 3-0, in a non-conference match here Tuesday.

Rutgers-Camden swept the match by scores of 30-16, 30-23 and 35-33.

It was the Lady Raptors’ first three-game sweep since a win at the College of Staten Island, Sept. 24, 2004, and was the first home sweep in the history of the Rutgers-Camden program, which started in 2000.

The victory also was the first in volleyball for Taylor, who led his Rutgers-Camden softball team to the Division III national championship in May.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 1-2. It is the closest the Lady Raptors have been to .500 this far into the campaign since their inaugural season, when they also won their third match to improve to 1-2.

Leading the way for the Lady Raptors were junior Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and freshmen Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Grochowski had 12 kills, seven service aces, two assists, 10 digs and six blocked shots. Polite had 10 kills, one assist, five aces, 10 digs and eight blocks, while Pohorely notched eight kills, two assists, six aces, four digs and one block.

Sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had 18 assists and 13 digs.
Freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected seven kills, one assist, two aces, four digs and one block for the Lady Raptors, while freshman opposite Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added eight digs, one block and one ace.

As a team the Lady Raptors recorded 37 kills, tying the program’s three-game match record set against Alvernia College Oct. 1, 2005. They also had a program three-game match record 22 service aces and added 17 blocks, one shy of the program’s three-game match mark set against the College of St. Elizabeth Sept. 27, 2003.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts Immaculata University at 1 p.m.

Raptors lose opening matches
in Franklin & Marshall Scramble

LANCASTER, PA (Sept. 2, 2006) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s volleyball team lost its opening two matches of the year here Saturday at the Franklin & Marshall Scramble.

Rutgers-Camden lost to Franklin & Marshall College, 30-15, 30-17 and 30-17. The Raptors also lost against York (PA) College, 30-18, 30-27 and 30-23.

Against host Franklin & Marshall, the Lady Raptors received three kills, six digs, four blocks and one ace from freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), while junior outside hitter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added three digs, two kills and one ace. Freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added three kills, two digs and one ace.

In the York match, Grochowski had six digs, three blocks, five kills and one ace, while Polite had five digs, four blocks and five kills. Freshman middle/outside hitter Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) notched two kills, two digs and three blocks.

Sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had eight assists in each match.
For York, junior Katie Hertz (Glenville, PA/Delone Catholic) notched 40 assists and nine digs, while sophomore Casi Brough (Hanover, PA/Spring Grove) notched 15 kills and 11 digs.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it plays its home opener against Valley Forge Christian College..
