Stewart, Fox capture titles
at NJAC track championships

POMONA (May 3, 2008) – Rutgers University-Camden junior Travis Stewart (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) and senior Mike Fox (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) earned titles here Saturday and each added a program record as the Scarlet Raptors competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Richard Stockton College.

Stewart captured the NJAC title at 10,000 meters in a time of 32:49.29 and then came back later in the day to finish second at 5,000 meters with a program-record time of 15:23.68. He broke his own mark of 15:26.95 set at the Lions’ Invitational April 28, 2007. The impressive performance earned Stewart All-NJAC First Team honors at 10,000 meters and All-NJAC Second Team honors at 5,000 meters.

Fox captured the NJAC title – and NJAC First Team honors – at 800 meters, running a 1:52.56 to post one of the top times in the country this season. That broke his old program mark of 1:52.60, set at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet May 14, 2007.

Those outstanding performances helped the Rutgers-Camden men post 66 points to finish sixth out of nine teams at the NJAC meet. The College of New Jersey won the men’s meet for the 11th consecutive season, with 187.5 points, while the TCNJ women (254 points) won their 16th straight NJAC title.

The Rutgers-Camden women finished ninth with 15 points. Eight points came from freshman Robin England (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), who finished second at 5,000 meters in a time of 19:22.19 to earn All-NJAC Second Team honors.

In addition to second-place finishes from Stewart and England at 5,000 meters, the Scarlet Raptors also received another All-NJAC Second Team honor when junior Jonathan Salamon (Bridgewater, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen) finished as the conference runner-up at 1,500 meters. Salamon posted a time of 3:59.21, less than one second off the program mark of 3:58.29 held by Fox.

The Rutgers-Camden men’s team also had a trio of athletes who finished third in their event to earn All-NJAC Honorable Mention. Sophomore Frank Iwanicki (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross) was third at 800 meters (1:55.19), teaming with Fox to give the Raptors two of the top three 800-meter runners in the conference. Likewise, the Raptors had two of the top three 10,000-meter runners as junior G. Brandon Gordon (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) finished third in 33:41.83, joining NJAC champion Stewart to produce 16 points for the Raptors in that event.

Rutgers-Camden also was sparked by freshman Ken Wise (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), who finished third in the high jump. Wise, who recorded a jump of 1.90 meters, earned NJAC Honorable Mention in the event, adding to the NJAC First Team honors he won while capturing the conference high jump title during the indoor season.

The 800-meter run was the busiest event of the day for the Scarlet Raptor men, who placed five athletes among the NJAC’s 27 competitors who finished the event. In addition to Fox and Iwanicki finishing first and third, respectively, sophomore Akeem Lloyd (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) was 10th, Salamon was 12th and freshman Osi Eigbe (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) finished 26th at 800 meters. Lloyd ran a 2:01.85, Salamon recorded a 2:02.39 and Eigbe ran a 2:17.58.

The Scarlet Raptors also showed their strength at 10,000 meters, where they featured three of the 12 athletes in that event. While Stewart and Gordon finished first and third, respectively, freshman Scott McCarthy (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) finished 10th in a time of 36:30.38.

The Rutgers-Camden men also received five points from their 4x400 relay team of Fox, Iwanicki, Lloyd and Salamon. That team finished fourth out of eight squads with a time of 3:26.02.

Sophomore Jon Anderson (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) produced three points with a sixth-place finish in the javelin competition (49.68 meters). Fox, Stewart, Salamon
lead Raptors at NJACs

EWING (May 5, 2007) – Junior Mike Fox (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) and sophomore Travis Stewart (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) broke their own Rutgers University-Camden track program records at 1,500 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, during third-place finishes and sophomore Jonathan Salamon (Bridgewater, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen) led the Scarlet Raptors’ strong 800-meter contingent with a second-place finish at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship here Saturday.

The Rutgers-Camden men scored 38 points to finish seventh of eight schools, while the women scored eight points and finished eighth. Host The College of New Jersey won both titles with the Lions’ men scoring 263.50 points and the women scoring 252.75.

Fox finished third at 1,500 meters and broke his own program record by posting a 3:58.29 clocking. His old mark of 4:03.78 was set April 10, 2004 at the Delaware Invitational.

Stewart posted a time of 9:48.92 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing third and lowering his former mark of 10:09.71 set at the Danny Curran Invitational March 31.

While Fox and Stewart each collected six points in their record-setting events, Salamon sparked the Scarlet Raptors to 14 points from their 800-meter runners. Salamon collected eight points by finishing second in a time of 1:55.12, while freshman Akeem Lloyd (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) tacked on six points for his third-place finish (1:56.73). Fox also finished 12th at 800 meters in a time of 2:05.55.

The Scarlet Raptors also received six points for a third-place finish from freshman Jon Anderson (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) in the javelin (52.50 meters).

The Raptors’ other two points came in a seventh-place finish by sophomore Brandon Gordon (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) at 10,000 meters. Gordon ran the distance in 36:22.93.

Three other members of the Raptors had a busy day in field events, with freshman Justin Edmonds (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and junior Michael McClain (Sewell, NJ/Bishop Eustace) both competing in the long jump and triple jump, while freshman Ian Chrzanowski (West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pulled double duty in the shot put and discus.

The other member of the Lady Raptors to compete in the NJAC Championships was freshman Ayla Maldonado (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown). She finished ninth in the long jump (4.73 M) and 10th in the triple jump (9.39 M).

Since All-NJAC honors are based on an individual's finish at the conference meet, Salamon will earn All-NJAC Second Team in the 800 meters, while the Raptors will feature four NJAC Honorable Mention athletes for third-place finishes: Lloyd (800 M), Fox (1,500 M), Stewart (3,000 M steeplechase) and Anderson (javelin).

NJAC names Rutgers-Camden’s Fox
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

CAMDEN (April 30, 2007) – Rutgers University-Camden junior Mike Fox (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week today following his record-breaking performance at the Lions Invitational Saturday at The College of New Jersey.
Mike Fox
Fox finished first in a field of 56 athletes in the 800-meter run, setting a Rutgers-Camden program record in the process. He won his event in a time of 1:52.76, breaking the program mark of 1:55.62 set earlier this year by sophomore teammate Jonathan Salamon (Bridgewater, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen), and helping him earn an 800-meter ranking of 11th nationally in Division III.

The record-setting feat also earned Fox his third honor this year as the school’s Raptor of the Week. He shared that honor Monday with softball pitcher Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown). Fox won Raptor of the Week honors outright for his indoor track performances on Feb. 5 and Feb. 26.

In addition to his school record at 800 meters, Fox has helped the Raptors establish relay records this spring in the 4x400 (3:24.54 at the New Jersey Invitational April 14), the 4x800 (8:02.85 at the Duke Invitational April 7) and the distance medley (10:53.65 at the Stockton Invitational March 24).

During the winter, Fox established the Rutgers-Camden indoor mile record (4:25.38 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational Feb. 23) and was a member of three record-setting relay teams in the 4x400 (3:27.30 at the FastTrack Invitational), the 4x800 (7:57.68) and the distance medley (10:32.93), both at the ECAC Championships March 2.

Fox was named the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete at the NJAC Indoor Championships Feb. 19 after winning the 800-meter race (1:58.76) and anchoring the winning distance medley team (10:35.49). Those victories earned Fox All-NJAC First Team honors in both events. That performance helped him capture the NJAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor on Feb. 20, the second time he won that award during the winter. He also won it on Feb. 5, then was named the ECAC Division III Track Athlete of the Week the next day.

A former First Team All-Burlington County League Liberty Division cross country runner at Rancocas Valley High School, Fox is a Biology major at Rutgers-Camden. He is the son of Bruce and Mary Ann Fox of Hainesport.

Last fall, while earning his first cross country letter for the Raptors, he joined Stewart as the first two Scarlet Raptors to earn All-NJAC cross country honors, with both being named to the Second Team. That accomplishment allowed them to share Co-Raptor of the Week honors on Oct. 30.
Jonathan Salamon
His accomplishments in track have been even more impressive. Last winter he was named team MVP of the Raptors’ first indoor program, establishing two individual and two relay records in the process. His mark at 800 meters (1:57.46) from last season (March 4, 2006 at the ECAC Indoor Championships) still stands. He also was named to the second annual Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Cross Country Team for his stellar work as an Economics major.

Stewart was named MVP of the Raptors’ cross country team during his freshman season, then helped the Raptors form their first indoor track team during the winter of 2005-06, setting marks in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and the 4x800 relay. All three of those marks were broken this year, with Stewart lowering his own marks in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

During the outdoor track season in 2006, Stewart won another team MVP honor after setting program marks in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:21.31 at the Lions Invitational April 29) and at 5,000 meters (16:05.10 at the Tuppeny Twilight Meet May 15).
