2007 RUTGERS-CAMDEN ATHLETE
Travis Stewart

Name: Travis Stewart
Hometown: Runnemede, NJ
Highschool: Triton Regional
College Major: Economics
Height: 5'11"

Travis Stewart opened his busy 2007-08 school year with the finest individual cross country campaign in program history, and the junior distance star continued his success with another outstanding indoor track season.

During the winter track season, Stewart earned New Jersey Athletic Conference First Team honors as a member of the Scarlet Raptors’ conference championship distance medley team. He ran the leadoff leg on the team which won the NJAC title Feb. 25 with a time of 10:34.24.

That honor was just one of the highlights during Stewart’s indoor season, which included a record-setting performance in the 5,000-meter race at the Valentine Invitational Feb. 9. Stewart posted a time of 15:11.53 to break his own Rutgers-Camden program record. Later in the season, he lowered that mark again, running a 15:09.57 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational Feb. 29.

Stewart, who also competed in the mile and 3,000-meter runs during the indoor season, capped his winter campaign at the ECAC Championships March 7, where he helped Rutgers-Camden finish seventh in the distance medley with a time of 10:28.38.

During the 2007 cross country season, Stewart recorded five of the top seven 8K times in program history. He finished his season on Nov. 17 by becoming the first Rutgers-Camden runner ever to compete in the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. He posted a time of 25:56 in the national meet, held at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he finished 122nd out of 280 runners.

Stewart’s time at the national meet is the third-fastest certified 8K time in program history. In his previous two meets, he recorded the top two program times, running a record 25:38.99 at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships (Oct. 27) and then lowering that mark to a 25:17.9 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals Nov. 10.

Stewart finished second overall out of 53 runners at the NJAC meet while becoming the first All-NJAC First Team runner in the history of the men’s program. He was 18th of 271 runners at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals.

Earlier in the season, Stewart’s time of 26:02.0 at the New York University Invitational (Sept. 15) broke the old school record of 26:27, set by Sam Woods in 1979. Stewart finished 15th out of 254 runners at the NYU event. That performance was sandwiched in between a pair of individual championships when he won both the Lebanon Valley College Invitational (Sept. 8) and the Gulf Coast Stampede in Pensacola, Florida (Sept. 29). His performance at Lebanon Valley helped him earn honors as the NJAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week and the ECAC Div. III Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week on Sept. 11 and 12, respectively.

During his brilliant fall season, Stewart also captured four honors as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week, winning the award on Sept. 10, Oct. 1, Oct. 29 and Nov. 19. In addition, Stewart earned his second consecutive honor as a member of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Cross Country Team for his stellar work as an Economics major.

After three seasons running cross country at Rutgers-Camden, Stewart has posted six of the top seven certified 8K times in program history (including the top four) and seven of the top 11 times.

Stewart led the Scarlet Raptors in all eight of his races as a sophomore in 2006, when he was among the top overall runners at every invitational, set one meet record, became the first All-NJAC men’s runner in program history and was named MVP of the Scarlet Raptors’ program. His 26:31.10 clocking at the NJAC Championships (Oct. 28) was the second-best certified 8K time in school history at that time. It placed him eighth out of 65 runners at the conference meet and earned him All-NJAC Second Team honors. He was the first All-NJAC male runner in program history and was joined, shortly thereafter, by teammate Jonathan Salamon on the NJAC Second Team.

Stewart set a meet record of 27:07.37 at the Cabrini Cross Country Invitational (Oct. 14), when he finished first out of the field of 87 runners. He was third out of 138 runners at the Philadelphia Metro Small College Tournament (Sept. 23), was 31st of 246 Division III runners at Lehigh University’s Paul Short Run (Sept. 29) and fourth of 115 at Goldey Beacom (Oct. 7). In addition to the NJAC meet, he continued his outstanding post-season performances at the ECAC Championships (12th out of 281 in 26:50, Nov. 4) and the NCAA Atlantic Regionals (59th out of 230, Nov. 18).

Stewart also was named to the second annual Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Cross Country Team.

A track standout as well as being an outstanding cross country runner, Stewart set three Rutgers-Camden indoor track records over the winter of 2006-07. He established marks at 1,600 meters (4:50.2 at Lebanon Valley College, Jan. 27), at 3,000 meters (8:57.05 at the NJAC Championships, Feb. 19) and at 5,000 meters (15:26.23 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational, Feb. 23). His 3,000 time at the NJAC meet earned him third place, good for All-NJAC Honorable Mention. His 1,600 time at Lebanon Valley College won that race.

Stewart also finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (a school-record 9:48.92) at the 2007 NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 5, earning NJAC Honorable Mention. He set a program mark at 5,000 meters (15:26.95 at the Lions Invitational, April 28) and anchored the record-setting Distance Medley team (10:53.65 at the Richard Stockton Invitational, March 24). He capped his banner year by breaking his own program record with a clocking of 31:56.39 to finish third in the 10,000-meter run at the ECAC Championships (May 17). That performance broke his mark of 32:28.35 set earlier in the spring at the Duke Invitational (April 6).

Stewart’s ECAC performance earned him honors as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week for May 21. It was his fourth weekly honor of the 2006-07 school year, with the first three coming during cross country season. He was named Raptor of the Week on Oct. 16 and Nov. 6, and shared the honor with Salamon on Oct. 30.

Stewart had a phenomenal year at Rutgers-Camden during the 2005-06 academic calendar, earning MVP honors for both the men’s cross country and men’s outdoor track and field programs. He also was a member of the school’s first indoor track team.

Stewart was the Raptors’ leading runner in all seven cross country invitationals as a freshman in 2005, when he recorded two of the fastest 8K times in program history. His top time of 27:10.40 came at the NJAC Championships Oct. 29, allowing Stewart to finish 24th overall out of 66 NJAC athletes. The following week, he ran a 27:57 at the ECAC Championships (Nov. 5).

In addition to his cross country talents, Stewart ran the 5,000 meters, 3,000 meters, 800 meters and was a member of the 4x800 relay team on the Raptors’ maiden indoor track team in 2006. He set the old program indoor marks at 5,000 meters (with a first-place time of 17:15.1 at Lebanon Valley College Jan. 28) and at 3,000 meters (9:30.64 at the Frank Colden Invitational Feb. 4), marks he broke during the 2006-07 winter. He also was on the old record-setting 4x800 team (8:30.13) which finished fourth at the NJAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 19). That mark also was broken during the 2006-07 indoor season.

Stewart had a banner 2006 spring season, setting Rutgers-Camden outdoor records in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:21.31 at the Lions Invitational April 29) and at 5,000 meters (16:05.10 at the Tuppeny Twilight Meet May 15). His performance at the Lions Invitational earned him honors as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week for May 1. He captured the conference title at 10,000 meters (34:01.61) at the NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 6).

Stewart won five varsity letters at Triton Regional High School, earning three in wrestling and one apiece in football and track and field. He was named a Second Team All-Olympic Conference wrestler at 152 pounds in 2004, and earned wrestling honors as the team motivator in 2003 and the hardest worker in 2004. In track, he captured the 1,600-meter race at the 2005 Cherokee Invitational.

Stewart also was an Honor Roll student in the classroom at Triton.

Travis, who plans to obtain his MBA, is the son of James Stewart and Vanessa K. Hosmer of Runnemede.
