Akeem Lloyd had another outstanding indoor track season for Rutgers-Camden during the winter of 2007-08. Lloyd set program records at 400 meters (52.34 at the Collegeville Classic Jan. 18) and 500 meters (1:06.61 at the Valentine Invitational Feb. 9) and also helped the Scarlet Raptors set program records in a trio of relays. Two of those relays came at the Valentine Invitational when he ran the third leg of the 4x400 (3:26.95) and the second leg of the distance medley (10:08.24). He also ran the leadoff leg of the Raptors’ record-setting 4x800 relay team (7:53.29), which finished a close second at the ECAC Championships March 8.

        Lloyd earned New Jersey Athletic Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 21 after his outstanding performance at the Collegeville Classic. His program-record time at 400 meters earned him a seventh-place finish out of 30 runners in that event. He also ran the third leg of the winning 4x800 team (8:09.51) and was the leadoff leg on the 4x400 team, which finished eighth out of 13 squads that day.

        Lloyd earned a pair of All-NJAC First Team honors at the conference indoor meet Feb. 25, running the third leg on a pair of winning relay teams, the 4x800 (8:05.32) and the distance medley (10:34.24). Overall, Lloyd was a part of five first-place relay teams, including three in the 4x800 and one apiece in the distance medley and the 4x400 during the indoor season.

        Lloyd completed his second season on the Rutgers-Camden cross country team during the 2007 fall campaign, running in all six meets for the Scarlet Raptors. He finished sixth on the team in three races and seventh in the other three, posting his personal best 8K time of 27:35.99 at the NJAC Championships Oct. 27. He was the Raptors’ sixth runner that day and was 21st overall out of 53 athletes as Rutgers-Camden finished second in the conference meet for its highest finish ever.

        Lloyd earned a varsity letter for every season during the 2006-07 school year at Rutgers-Camden, competing on the 2006 cross country team before capturing All-New Jersey Athletic Conference honors during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. During the 2006-07 winter, Lloyd earned All-NJAC First Team honors as part of the conference champion distance medley team. In the spring, he was All-NJAC Honorable Mention after finishing third at the conference meet in the 800 meters.

        Lloyd competed in all eight of the Raptors’ invitationals during the 2006 cross country season. He finished third on the team at the Philadelphia Metro Small College Tournament Sept. 23, where he placed 26th overall out of 138 runners with a time of 30:03.95. Lloyd posted his top 8K time of 28:56 at the ECAC Championships Nov. 4. He finished 111th out of 281 runners in that meet.

        Lloyd helped set Rutgers-Camden indoor track records in the 4x200 (1:42.7 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational Jan. 27), the 4x400 (3:27.30 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational Feb. 23), and the 4x800 (7:57.68 at the ECAC Championships March 3, when the Raptors finished second in that race). He also set the Raptors’ individual mark in the 400-meter dash (52.66) at the NYU FastTrack Invitational. That performance helped Lloyd earn honors as the NJAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Rookie of the Week for Feb. 26.

        Lloyd also earned NJAC First Team honors, along with Jonathan Salamon, Stefon Coleman and Mike Fox, by winning the distance medley at the NJAC Championships (Feb. 19). Their time of 10:35.49 set a short-lived program record, which was shattered at the ECAC Championships (March 2) by Coleman, Salamon, Fox and Frank Iwanicki.

        Overall, Lloyd competed in seven indoor meets over the winter, running on the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley teams, in addition to competing in the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter events.

        Lloyd opened his banner 2007 outdoor track season in style, joining Fox, Iwanicki and Travis Stewart to set the program’s outdoor distance medley record of 10:53.65 at the Richard Stockton Invitational (March 24). He also joined Patrick Eigbe, Coleman and Salamon on the record-setting 800 sprint medley (1:37.69). He ran on a pair of winning teams at that meet, with the distance medley team and the 4x400 squad both taking first place. His performance helped him earn a pair of honors March 26 as the Rutgers-Camden Raptor of the Week and the NJAC Men’s Outdoor Track Rookie of the Week.

        By the end of the spring, Lloyd also had run on Rutgers-Camden record-setting teams in the 4x400 (3:22.31 at the ECAC Championships, May 18) and the 4x800 (8:02.85 at the Duke Invitational, April 7). Lloyd also competed at 400 meters (51.06 at the Lions Invitational, April 28) and weekly at 800 meters, where he recorded his best time of 1:55.14 at Swarthmore’s Last Chance Meet (May 14). Lloyd earned his NJAC Honorable Mention with a third-place finish at 800 meters (1:56.73) at the conference meet May 5.

        Lloyd had an outstanding career as a student-athlete at Atlantic City High School. An Honor Roll student, he also was a multi-sport standout for the Vikings. He competed in four sports and earned team MVP honors in track, cross country and basketball. He also was named the Special Teams Player of the Year in Football. In cross country, Lloyd earned Honorable Mention Cape-Atlantic League American Division honors in 2004 and Second Team Cape-Atlantic League American Division honors as a senior in 2005. He was a Cape-Atlantic all-star in basketball and helped his team capture the state Group 4 title in 2005. He also won the Cape-Atlantic championship at 800 meters and was the sectional runnerup as a senior in 2006, when he was named to the Courier-Postnewspaper’s All-Group 4 Second Team and the Cape-Atlantic League American Division First Team.
 
       A Business Management major at Rutgers-Camden who plans to open his own business, Akeem is the son of Mary Marsh and Leroy Lloyd of Atlantic City.
