         Tony Normil brings over 20 years of basketball knowledge and over 10 years of coaching experience to his position as an assistant coach with the Rutgers-Camden men’s program. He returns for his second year with the Raptors, where he will be joined by his son, Tony, who will be a member of the Rutgers-Camden team.

        Born and raised in New York City, Normil grew up on the playgrounds of Harlem and Brooklyn. He started his career at Louis D. Brandeis High School in lower Manhattan and played collegiate basketball at Manhattan Community College. He led the team in scoring and assists, averaging  25 ppg and six apg from 1984-1986. He was named first team all-conference and MVP in 1986.  He later played in many professional leagues in New York City, helping his teams to three championships from 1990-1994. In 1991 he achieved MVP honors in the Corporate Pro League after leading the league in scoring (30 ppg). He led that league in assists in 1992, averaging 12 apg.

        From 1990-1995, Normil coached children in the Junior Knicks League, Starrett City Program, Greater Brownsville League and Beacon Program in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a player/coach in the West 4th Pro League, Nickelodeon Pro League, and Tillary Park.

        Normil moved to South Jersey in 1995 and started coaching at the high school level that same year. He served as an assistant varsity coach at Pemberton Township High School from 1995-2000. Since his arrival, he helped the team improve to a 24 -3 record, win two conference titles and reach the state semifinals in 1996. From 2002-2004, he was an assistant coach at Medford Technical High School, were he also served as a substitute teacher. He also helped turn the program around as Medford Tech went from a 2-20 record in 2002 to a 12-10 record in 2003.

        Normil also coached the New Jersey Panthers and the New Jersey Jaguars AAU teams.

        Over the years, Normil has mentored players like Charles Stanfield (Duquesne University), Clayton Brown (University of Maine), Tamal Forchion (George Washington  University), Kyle Williams (Howard University) and many others who have played college basketball or competed overseas.

        Normil coached a Summer Pro Basketball League team in Pemberton, were he won four straight championships. The team was undefeated from 2003-2006, posting a 54-0 record for a league and county record. He was named the Coach of the Year in 1995, 1998, and 2005.

        In addition to basketball, Normil is involved in community services. He was nominated for Volunteer of the Year in 2001 by the Burlington County Times. He received the Community Service Award in 2003. He is involved in anti-drug programs, mentoring programs and helps with many basketball programs and camps in the community.

        Normil started coaching on the college level at Burlington County College in 2005, becoming the Barons’ interim head coach following the retirement of the head coach. He instituted a weight training program, study hall, nutrition program, training sessions and an intramural basketball league during his time at BCC. He was successful at recruiting many quality student-athletes.

        Dedicated to improving the Rutgers-Camden basketball program by building successful student-athletes, Normil brings a positive attitude and a winning philosophy to his job with the Scarlet Raptors.
