Sam Shockey...three unearned runs allowed in nightcap; 1-for-3 at the plate with a double Ramapo sweeps away Raptors' winning streak

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 2, 2013) – The Ramapo College softball team rode the strong pitching of juniors Harley Masiello (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), who made four unearned runs stand up, as it posted a doubleheader sweep over Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0 and 3-1, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action here Tuesday afternoon.

The Roadrunners’ sweep put a sudden end to the Scarlet Raptors’ 13-game winning streak, the fifth-longest string in program history. Rutgers-Camden, which hadn’t lost since the second game of a doubleheader against Wilkes University March 3, falls to 16-5 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC.

Ramapo improves to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC.

Ramapo entertains Drew University Thursday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.

Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action Saturday when it plays a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Montclair State University, which is ranked No. 1 in the country.

Game 1
Ramapo 1, Rutgers-Camden 0

Ashleigh Johnson...three-hitter, one unearned run in the first gameWith Masiello and Rutgers-Camden senior Ashleigh Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) locked in a scoreless pitching duel, the Roadrunners got the only break they needed in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore centerfielder Jaclyn Lima (Linden, NJ/Linden) reached second base on a leadoff infield throwing error. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored the game’s only run on a RBI single to right field by junior first baseman Kristen Wilson (Union, NJ/Union). It was the only at bat of the game for Wilson, who entered the game defensively in the sixth inning.

Masiello, meanwhile, did the rest with a one-hit shutout, walking two and striking out six in raising her record to 4-3. She pitched no-hit ball until Raptor senior first baseman Kaitlyn Gaskill (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) led off the fifth inning with a base hit to left field. An error on a sacrifice bunt helped Gaskill get as far as third base with one out, but Masiello wriggled out of the jam by sandwiching a pop up to the mound and a strikeout around a walk.

Johnson, meanwhile, fell to 9-2 despite allowing only three hits, three walks and the unearned run. She struck out five.

Game 2
Ramapo 3, Rutgers-Camden 1

The second game continued the trend of unearned runs, as everything was unearned off both Schneider and Raptor freshman Sam Shockey (Deptford, NJ/Deptford).

Rutgers-Camden scored an unearned run in the first after freshman second baseman Cait Eltzholtz (Bellmawr, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hit a one-out single and was forced at second on a fielder’s choice by freshman third baseman Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran). Shockey ripped a double to the left-center field wall to put runners at second and third, and Larson scored when Schneider made a wild throw to first on Gaskill’s grounder to the mound.

Shockey made that run stand up until the fifth, when with two outs, Ramapo senior shortstop Kelsey Higgins (Wall, NJ/Wall) hit a seemingly harmless ground ball to first base. Gaskill gobbled up the ball wide of the bag, but nobody covered first, leaving Higgins with a gift hit. An infield error followed that play and Lima loaded the bases with a single. Freshman pinch-hitter Erin Witherspoon (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) followed with a two-run single to left field and junior leftfielder Caitlin Smith (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) plated Lima with a double to right center.

Schneider (4-4) finished with a five-hitter, one unearned run, no walks and three strikeouts.

Shockey (6-3) also had a five-hitter, walking two and allowing three unearned runs. She struck out six.
