Valeri Bohn returns for her third year with the Rutgers-Camden softball program after playing in 34 games, starting nine, as a sophomore during the 2007 campaign. She hit .118 (2-for-17) with one RBI and seven runs scored. She also walked twice, had one sacrifice and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for the second consecutive season. Last year she handled all eight chances without an error, giving her 20 chances without an error in her collegiate career.
Bohn collected her hits last season when she went 1-for-2 in the opening games of doubleheaders against Hilbert College (March 15) and William Paterson University (April 21). She scored one run and added two putouts against Hilbert, while she had one putout and her lone RBI against Paterson, coming on a second-inning single.
Bohn appeared in 25 games as a Rutgers-Camden freshman during the Raptors’ run to the Division III national championship. She made four starts and was used primarily as a pinch-running specialist. She hit .143, going 1-for-7 with her first collegiate hit being a three-run inside-the-park home run during a seven-run fourth inning against John Jay College (March 31, Game Two). She went 1-for-3 with three RBIs in that game, while also collecting eight putouts at first base.
Bohn added four walks and a fine .417 on-base percentage during her first year of Rutgers-Camden softball. She had a .571 slugging percentage, four RBIs and 12 putouts. Despite her limited at bats, she managed to score nine runs. One of those runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning of the Lady Raptors’ conference opener against defending NJAC champion William Paterson University (April 1, Game One). With the Raptors and the Pioneers locked in a 1-1 tie, she was inserted as a pinch-runner and scored the winning run on a double by Mo Baney, sparking a 3-1 Rutgers-Camden win. That victory was the springboard for the Raptors’ 18-0 run through the New Jersey Athletic Conference regular-season schedule.
Bohn’s first collegiate game came against Kenyon College (March 14), when she went 0-for-1 but produced her first collegiate RBI on a sacrifice fly. Four days later, she had a pair of walks in two plate appearances against Knox College.
In addition to her softball accomplishments, Bohn played eight games as a member of the Lady Raptors’ soccer team during her freshman season and was a member of the Lady Raptors’ 2006 volleyball team as a sophomore. She appeared in 12 games and collected two kills, seven digs and one service ace.
Bohn earned three softball and two soccer letters at Holy Cross High School, where she was named soccer MVP as a junior. A softball team captain, she earned Most Improved Player honors in 2004 and captured both Burlington County League Patriot Division First Team and the Courier-Post’s All-Non-Public (formerly All-Parochial) Second Team honors as a senior in 2005. She also earned a Scholar-Athlete Award as a senior.
An outstanding student who had four years of perfect attendance during her scholastic career, Bohn was a member of the National Honor Society. An Honor Roll student, she earned a Physical Education Award, a Spanish Award, Honors with Distinction, Academic Excellence, an award from the Performing and Visual Arts Society and was selected as a Little Green Organization Scholar-Athlete.
Bohn carries one piece of New York Yankees attire with her at all times.
A Spanish major with a minor in German, Valeri is the daughter of Colleen Bohn, Len Serio and Mickey Bohn of Delran.
