McDermott leads five Lady Raptors
on All-NJAC women’s soccer teams

CAMDEN (Nov. 2, 2006) – Rutgers University-Camden senior forward Aubree McDermott (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) captured All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Second Team honors and four teammates were named NJAC Honorable Mention when the NJAC women’s soccer all-star squads were announced today.

The Lady Raptor quartet earning honorable mention includes seniors Katie O’Connor (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Kelley Murphy (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights), junior Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) and freshman Jessica Leoni (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional).

McDermott turned in an outstanding senior season, leading the club in goals (11), assists (10) and points (32). Her 11 goals were the sixth-highest single-season total in program history and two shy of her personal high, set in 2004. Her 10 assists tied for the sixth-highest season mark and her 32 points tied for the fifth-best season mark in program history.

McDermott currently ranks first in the NJAC in assists (10) and assists per game (0.53), fifth in points (32), points per game (1.68) and goals (11) and sixth in goals per game (0.58).

McDermott set a single-game program record with eight points against the College of St. Elizabeth (Oct. 7), when she had two assists and notched the eighth hat trick in program history. That performance earned her the school’s Raptor of the Week honor for Oct. 9. She tied her own mark with eight points (three goals, two assists) against New Jersey City University Oct. 25.

McDermott also assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 win over Cabrini College (Sept. 6), one assist shy of the single-game program mark. There have been 11 three-assist games in school history and McDermott has two of them, including one against Lancaster Bible College (Sept. 15, 2004).

McDermott was named Rutgers-Camden’s “Offensive Player of the Year” in 2005, when she had seven goals (four game-winning tallies), seven assists and 21 points. As a sophomore in 2004, she scored a pair of goals in a 15-second span (10:30 and 10:45) against Centenary College Sept. 27, setting a record for the fastest two goals in program history. She finished second on the 2004 Lady Raptors with 13 goals, including one game-winning tally, added six assists and tied for second on the team in scoring (32 points). She earned a berth on the Pepsi-Cola Kick-Off Classic all-tournament team at Marywood University (Sept. 4-5) after helping the Raptors win two games to capture the championship

For her career, McDermott played in 58 games at Rutgers-Camden after transferring from Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University following her freshman season. With the Lady Raptors she notched 31 goals (fourth on the career charts), seven game-winning goals (fourth), 23 assists (fifth) and 85 points (fourth).

O’Connor, who played everywhere from back to forward during her four-year Rutgers-Camden career, became the all-time program leader in games played on Oct. 17, 2006 when she appeared in her 75th game with the Lady Raptors. She passed the mark of 74 set by former teammate Katlyn Pagaduan (2002-05). She also headed in the winning goal to spark the Raptors to a 2-0 victory over Wesley College during her milestone game.

She capped her senior season by collecting seven points against New Jersey City University Oct. 25. Her three-assist game was the 11th time that has happened in program history and the first since McDermott did it against Cabrini College on Sept. 6. It was one assist shy of the program mark shared by two players, and her seven points were one shy of McDermott’s single-game record, accomplished twice.

O’Connor, who played everywhere from fullback to forward at Rutgers-Camden, became the all-time program leader in games played on Oct.
O’Connor started all 20 of her games at fullback in 2004, when she was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 13, 2004) and was named the ECAC Metro Player of the Week the next day. She helped the Raptors post eight shutouts, including a program-record five straight to start the season. She captured her first All-NJAC Honorable Mention honor that season.

During O’Connor’s freshman and junior seasons the Raptors recorded 10 shutouts each year to set a program mark. She was the school’s Raptor of the Week as a freshman fullback (Oct. 20, 2003) when she helped Rutgers-Camden clinch its first berth in the NJAC playoffs.
O’Connor finished her career with 78 games at Rutgers-Camden, scoring 13 goals (including six game-winning goals) and nine assists for 35 points. Two of her three game-winning goals last year came in 1-0 wins over Kean (Oct. 15) and Ramapo (Oct. 26). She also earned a berth on the all-tournament team at Widener University’s Pioneer Classic (Sept. 10-11, 2005).

The NJAC honor was the first for Murphy, a tenacious fullback who was a common factor in the top three defensive units in program history. With her at sweeper in 2003, the Lady Raptors set a club record with a 0.71 goals-against average. They had a 1.00 GAA in 2005 and a 1.17 GAA in 2006, the second- and third-best season marks in school history. In her three full seasons, discounting her injury-shortened 2004 campaign when she was held to only five games, Murphy played a major role in 26 shutouts over 56 games. The 2003 and 2005 Raptors each posted 10 shutouts, tying for the single-season program record.

In addition to her defensive prowess, Murphy added a pair of assists in her 61 career games at Rutgers-Camden. Her first assist came against Green Mountain College (Sept. 25, 2004) before she was sidelined for the year with injuries. She also had one assist as a senior on Sept. 3 as the Lady Raptors posted a 2-0 win over host Shenandoah University to win the Shenandoah Women’s Soccer Shootout.

A transfer from Rowan University, Murphy made an immediate impact at Rutgers-Camden, earning a berth on the all-tourney team as the Raptors won the championship of the season-opening Franklin & Marshall Women’s Soccer Kick-Off Tournament (Aug. 30-31, 2003). She also earned the school’s Raptor of the Week honor on Sept. 8, 2003, following back-to-back shutouts over Albright and St. Joseph’s-Patchogue.

Mancine, another defensive anchor at back or in the midfield, notched two goals and one assist for five points this season. She also led a stalwart defensive unit which posted a 1.17 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

A two-year member of the Rutgers-Camden women’s soccer team after playing a season at Camden County College, Mancine helped the 2005 Raptors tie the program record with 10 shutouts. She earned Raptor of the Week honors on Oct. 17, 2005 and was named the NJAC’s Defensive Player of the Week the same day. She added honors as the ECAC Div. III Metro Player of the Week on Oct. 18.

A NJCAA Division III All-American Second Team player during her one year at Camden County College, Mancine has played in 39 games at Rutgers-Camden. She has collected two goals and five assists for nine points, while helping the Lady Raptors post 17 shutouts.

Leoni had a fine freshman season for the Raptors, playing both in the midfield and the back. She played in 17 games, starting 16, and tied for second on the team with six goals. She also had three assists and finished third in scoring with 15 points. Her three game-winning goals tied O’Connor for the team lead.

During her senior year at Highland Regional High School, Leoni earned All-Group 3 First Team soccer honors from the Courier-Post newspaper.

The Lady Raptors posted a 10-8-1 record this season.

Campbell’s honor comes two weeks after the Raptors earned their first NJAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. Freshman forward Kendyll Clayton (Philadelphia, PA/Holy Spirit) won the honor on Sept. 4.

Campbell earned four varsity letters in track and three in soccer during her scholastic career at Audubon High School. She also was an Honor Roll student.

Campbell’s goal lifts Rutgers-Camden
to 2-1 NJAC win at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK (Sept. 16, 2006) –  Freshman midfielder Kate Campbell (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) broke a tie game with a put-back of a shot off the Rutgers-Newark goalie to power the Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over its sister school in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams here Saturday night.

Campbell converted the rebound of a shot by freshman midfielder Kendyll Clayton (Philadelphia, PA/Holy Spirit), which came off of a breakaway save by Newark sophomore keeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights). Campbell’s goal, her second of the season, came at 38:43.

The Scarlet Raptors, who improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, had to rally from an early 1-0 deficit. Rutgers-Newark (3-2 overall, 0-1 in the NJAC) scored first when sophomore midfielder Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Fanwood-Scotch Plains) knocked in a cross from freshman midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls). Her shot slipped out of the grasp of Scarlet Raptor sophomore goalie Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran) just 1:15 into the game. Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 16:23 on an unassisted goal by senior forward Aubree McDermott (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown). McDermott notched her second goal of the season after beating a defender on the left side and firing a shot inside the near post.

Junior goalkeeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) replaced Gatti at the half, but she faced only one shot and did not make a save to close out the match. Gatti faced five first-half shots, making no saves and allowing the early goal.

Hastings finished the night with six saves.

Rutgers-Camden survives to post
2-1 women’s soccer win over Ursinus

CAMDEN (Sept. 13, 2006) –  The Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team made the most of its limited opportunities in its home opener here Wednesday night, scoring two goals on only three shots as the Lady Raptors outlasted Ursinus College, 2-1, in a non-conference game.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 4-1, while Ursinus falls to 2-2.

The Bears out-shot the Lady Raptors, 14-3, in the game, forcing Rutgers-Camden junior keeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) to make nine saves. The Raptors, however, notched a goal in each half, including the game-winning tally by freshman midfielder Jessica Leoni (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional) at 70:32. Leoni, near the far left post, tapped in a long cross from the right side by senior forward Aubree McDermott (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown). It was the fifth goal of the season for Leoni and the third game-winning tally. It also was McDermott’s fifth assist.

That shot by Leoni was the only shot Rutgers-Camden managed in a second half which saw the Bears hold a commanding 10-1 advantage in shots. Ursinus scored its lone goal at 51:49, tying the game at 1-1, when junior forward Noelle Bisinger (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) sent a pass across the top of the box to the right side, which was converted by junior midfielder Sarah Gardner (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional). It was the second goal of the season for Gardner and Bisinger’s second assist.

Ursinus threatened most of the second half. After the Lady Raptors notched the go-ahead goal, the Bears nearly tied the game with 1:30 remaining, but a direct kick by junior forward Chelsea Morin (Newtown, CT/Newtown) slammed off the crossbar.

The Raptors scored the lone goal of the first half at 24:55 when junior back Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) tallied her second goal of the year on a direct kick. Mancine’s goal was one of only two shots the Raptors had in the first half – earlier in the half she hit a rocket off the crossbar.

Cargen improved her record to 4-0 for the Raptors with her nine saves.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a 7 p.m. game at Rutgers-Newark.

Ursinus plays a road game the same day with a 7 p.m. contest at Gettysburg College.

Juniata hands Lady Raptors
first loss of season, 4-3

HUNTINGDON, PA (Sept. 11, 2006) –  Juniata College freshmen Amanda Broadwell (Newfounddland, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Laura Goodlander (Red Land, PA/Red Land) scored second-half goals to break a 2-2 tie and goalkeeper Lisa Russo (Haskell, NJ/Lakeland) stopped a penalty shot to help the Juniata College women’s soccer team outlast Rutgers University-Camden, 4-3, in a non-conference game here Monday.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Raptors, who had opened the year with three straight wins. Juniata improves to 3-1 with its third straight win.

After watching Juniata score the first two goals of the game, Rutgers-Camden roared back to knot the halftime score at 2-2 on tallies by freshmen Jessica Leoni (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional) and Kendyll Clayton (Philadelphia, PA/Holy Spirit). Leoni scored at 21:03 on a shot which deflected off a Juniata defender. She assisted on Clayton’s goal at 23:20 with a cross into the box.

Just when the Lady Raptors appeared to have regained the momentum, Broadwell collected a loose ball outside the 18-yard line and drilled a shot into the upper right corner at 50:42.

Eleven minutes later Russo would help preserve that lead as a hand ball in the box gave Rutgers-Camden a penalty kick. But Russo deflected the Lady Raptors’ low shot and Juniata cleared the ball keep the lead at one.

The Eagles turned that momentum into another goal as Goodlander launched a long shot after a failed clearance. Her shot snuck into the upper corner to give Juniata a 4-2 cushion.

Rutgers-Camden cut the gap to 4-3 when freshman Kate Campbell (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) finished off the rebound of a shot by senior Katie O’Connor (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) at 70:37. The Lady Raptors had several chances to tie the game in the final 20 minutes, but Russo made two of her four saves down the stretch to save the Eagles’ victory.

Rutgers-Camden finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The game started slowly for the Lady Raptors, who allowed an own goal at 6:52 and watched Juniata tack on a goal by Alicia Walsh (Latrobe, PA/Latrobe) at 9:09.

Just as quickly as Juniata scored, Rutgers-Camden erased the deficit with a pair of goals in a 2:17 span midway through the first half. Leoni beat two defenders in the box to score her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 21:03 and later sent a cross to Clayton, which her freshman teammate converted for her second tally of the season.

Junior Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) played the first 45 minutes for Rutgers-Camden and finished with two saves, while sophomore Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran) made one save in playing the second half.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it plays its home opener at 7 p.m. against Ursinus College.

to 3-2 victory at Cabrini College

The Lady Raptors improve to 3-0, while the Cavaliers fall to 1-2.

Rutgers-Camden took an early 1-0 lead when McDermott assisted on a goal by senior forward Katie O’Connor (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) at 13:24. McDermott slid a rebound to O’Connor, who tapped it in for her second goal of the year.

Cabrini, however, bounced back with back-to-back goals 65 seconds apart by freshman Sabina DeGisi (Merion Mercy Academy) at 16:26 and 17:31. She scored on a solo run down the right side and a header, giving Cabrini the lead in the first on-campus night game in school history.

WINCHESTER, VA (Sept. 3, 2006) – Rutgers University-Camden claimed the 2006 Shenandoah Women's Soccer Shootout championship Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over host Shenandoah University.

The Raptors (2-0) turned Sunday's game in the three-team tourney into a championship contest by downing Bridgewater College 4-0 Saturday night in Harrisonburg. Rutgers-Camden then made the trip up I-81 and downed the Hornets (1-1) with a pair of first-half goals.

With just under 10 minutes to play in the first, the Lady Raptors got an own goal off of a corner kick to give themselves an insurance tally.

New-look Lady Raptors ready for season
2005 season review/2006 preview

Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer coach Tom Greenawalt is ready for his Lady Raptors to take the next step.
In his first year as the Rutgers-Camden head coach, Greenawalt led the Raptors to a 12-8 record in 2005, one victory shy of the program record of 13 wins, set in 2003. The Lady Raptors also posted a 5-4 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, second only to their all-time best 5-2-2 NJAC mark in 2003.
This season the Lady Raptors will team seven letterwinners with 15 newcomers to give Greenawalt a larger squad and better depth than he had in 2005.
“We have some goals,” said Greenawalt, whose team opens its season Sept. 2-3 in Virginia, playing at Bridgewater and Shenandoah, respectively, as part of the Shenandoah University Tournament. “We should get more than 12 wins, if we stay injury-free. We’re young, but I think we’re a better team than last year.”
Rutgers-Camden used a tenacious defense as the springboard to success in 2005, tying the team record with 10 shutouts on its way to reaching the NJAC tournament for the third consecutive season. The Raptors finished third in the NJAC with their 10 shutouts, while also placing third in goals-against average (1.00) and shutouts per game (0.50).
Greenawalt’s defense took a hit following the season with the departure of Therese Comella (Delran, NJ/Delran), who played the entire season of 1,807:53 minutes in goal (a school record) and set program single-season goalie marks with 12 wins and 10 shutouts. She also set a record for consecutive shutout minutes by a goalkeeper from October 1-18, recording 409:20, aided by four straight shutouts.
Other key losses included backs Michelle Bisceglia (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) and Katlyn Pagaduan (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), who set the program’s career record with 74 games played, and versatile Erin Boiler (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross), the team’s Most Valuable Player. Another void was left in the midfield and up top with the loss of Kate Machion (Blackwood, NJ/Paul VI), Sarah Pacella (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and Allyson Jones (Audubon, NJ/Audubon). Overall, the Raptors lost 16 goals, 10 assists and 42 points out of their 28 goals, 22 assists and 78 points.
The 2005 Lady Raptors won four of their first six games, including the consolation contest at Widener University’s Pioneer Classic Sept. 11, when Pagaduan, junior Katie O’Connor (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and freshman Jones earned a spot on the all-tournament team. That game came three days after Jones became the seventh player in program history to notch a hat trick, scoring three goals in a 7-0 win over SUNY-Farmingdale Sept. 8.
Midway through the season, the Raptors won six of seven games, all by shutout scores, including four straight during Comella’s record streak of shutout minutes. That streak started in the closing minutes of a 4-0 loss to The College of New Jersey, which was ranked No. 3 nationally at the time and finished the year as the NCAA Division III runnerup to Messiah.
The shutout streak also brought recognition to sophomore back Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 17 and added Division III ECAC Metro Player of the Week honors the next day.
Rutgers-Camden’s season ended Oct. 29 with a tough 1-0 loss at Kean University in the opening round of the NJAC playoffs. Now Greenawalt and the Lady Raptors are looking to extend their success to the next level. Once again, the Lady Raptors will be banking on a strong defense, but this year Greenawalt feels like the offense will be stronger as well.
“I have four goal-scorers this year,” said the coach, referring to returning veterans O’Connor and senior Aubree McDermott (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and a pair of freshmen, Jessica Ramirez (Union, NJ/Union) and Kendyll Clayton (Philadelphia, PA/Holy Spirit). McDermott led the team with seven goals, seven assists and 21 points last season. O’Connor (4-2-10) finished fourth in scoring.
“We’ll rotate four players at forward,” said Greenawalt, who will team McDermott with Ramirez and pair O’Connor and Clayton together. “Aubree will be leading the way. She had a great pre-season. She’s going to be the headliner this year.”
O’Connor is a versatile player who has had an outstanding career at Rutgers-Camden, beginning as a freshman back. With 59 games in a Raptor uniform, she enters her senior year only 15 games shy of Pagaduan’s career record.
Freshmen Ramirez and Clayton, meanwhile, have been impressive in the pre-season.
“Kendyll has good one-on-one moves,” Greenawalt said. “She has good touch on the ball and she’s probably the hardest worker on the team. She will play a major role to increase our goal production. Jessica Ramirez has one of the hardest shots I’ve seen by a female in years.”
With a more balanced and potent attack, the Lady Raptors should be able to improve upon their average of 1.4 goals per game, which left them little margin for error in 2005. Yet like the team from a year ago, Rutgers-Camden will once again live and die on its stingy defense. A year ago, Comella played every minute of every game in goal, allowing 20 goals for a 1.00 goals-against average.
Greenawalt’s defense this time around will be anchored by the goalie tandem of junior Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and sophomore Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran). Cargen, who was at Rutgers-Camden last fall, spent the whole season recovering from injuries and didn’t see any game time. Gatti, a transfer, played in four games at Rowan last fall.
In the back, the Lady Raptors will return senior Kelley Murphy (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights), a hard-nosed, tenacious leader who helped anchor the rugged defense in 2005. Murphy and freshman Julia Jackson (Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) will be the Lady Raptors’ two middle backs.
“Julia is the best one-on-one defender we have,” Greenawalt said. “She’s dominant in the air.”
The outside backs will be a pair of freshmen, Amber Chmura (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) on the right side and Heather Thom (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional) on the left. Greenawalt also has plenty of talent and depth to rotate into the back, including sophomore Jenna Perez (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), who played in all 20 games, making 13 starts, during a fine freshman season in 2005. Two newcomers in the back will be sophomore Kristen Borton (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade), who missed last season with injuries, and junior Katie Ferrara (Somerdale, NJ/Paul VI), who was a Second Team All-Garden State Athletic Conference player at Camden County College.
“Defensively we’re shooting for shutouts again,” said Greenawalt, whose team recorded shutouts in half of its 20 contests last season. All three of the new defenders have played our system in club ball, and Kelley played it for me last year. It’s a defensive scheme we have had a year and a spring to work on.”
Another defender will be freshman Danielle Hogan (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), while freshman Kate Campbell (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) will see time in the midfield or the back.
With the emergence of a strong group of defenders, Mancine moves up into the midfield, where she will team with freshman Jessica Leoni (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional) as center midfielders.
“Leoni has a big role to play, stepping into center midfield as a freshman,” Greenawalt said. “She has a lot of class on the ball.”
On the outside, Greenawalt has a rotation of five players, including letterwinners in junior midfielder Deanna Richardson (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and senior Josephine “Joie” Stansbury (Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Richardson, who started 13 of her 20 games last year and added one goal, is also one of the most versatile players on the squad. Along with O’Connor, she will be a utility-type athlete who can play every position.
Stansbury played in 17 games off the bench in her first year at Rutgers-Camden last season.
Newcomers to the midfield include freshmen Tammy Hahn (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional), Tina Mascia (Deptford, NJ/Washington Township) and Dana Walters (Galloway, NJ/Absegami).
“Dana is going to follow in O’Connor’s footsteps as a utility player,” Greenawalt said. “She can play everywhere.
“We have more depth than last year. I can make a couple of subs. It gives me the chance to pull Brittney out of back and play her in a midfield role. We’re a young team. It’s a whole new team.”
