Centenary College eliminates
Lady Raptors in ECAC semifinals
HACKETTSTOWN (Nov. 10, 2007) – The second-seeded Centenary College Lady Cyclones scored a pair of second-half goals and went on to eliminate #3 seed Rutgers University-Camden, 2-0, in the ECAC Division III Metro Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals here Saturday.
The Lady Raptors ended their historical season with an 11-8-4 record, one game after posting the first post-season win in program history with a 1-0 first-round ECAC victory over St. Joseph’s College-Patchogue Wednesday.
Centenary, which has won eight of its last 10 games, improves to 14-5-2 on the season. The Lady Cyclones travel to top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology Sunday for a 1 p.m. title game showdown.
The victory was Centenary’s third straight in the all-time series, shaving the Raptors’ series edge to 4-3. The teams hadn’t played since Centenary won a 5-4 decision on Sept. 27, 2004.
Rutgers-Camden entered its ECAC Metro semifinal game with five shutouts in its previous six contests, giving the Lady Raptors a school-record 11 for the year. They held the Lady Cyclones to a scoreless halftime tie before Centenary notched the only goal it needed at 64:40. The Lady Cyclones’ Bianca Santulli (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater) collected a Raptor goal kick and played a long ball down the left side to Centenary’s leading scorer, Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck, NJ/Middletown South). DiDonna completed the play for her 18th goal of the season.
Although the Lady Raptors made a furious attempt to tie the score, Centenary goalie Ashley Denti (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was up to the challenge. She made two of her three saves in the second half, and then capped her effort with a long goal kick to spring teammate Sam Vanni (Haskell, NJ/Lakeland) for an insurance goal at 83:25.
Centenary out-shot Rutgers-Camden, 9-8, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden senior keeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made two saves – both in the first half – in the final game of her collegiate career. She closed her two-year Raptor career with nine shutouts, one shy of the program’s career mark of 10 by Therese Comella (2004-05). Cargen also finished her career with 16 wins (tied for second), 15 losses (second), five ties (tied for first), 182 saves (second), 45 goals allowed (second), 350 shots faced (second), 3273:33 minutes in goal (second) and as the all-time program leader in goals-against average (1.24) for any keeper over the NCAA minimum of 2500 minutes played. This season she had nine wins (tied for third on the single-season charts), eight losses (tied for first), four ties (first), 119 saves (first), seven shutouts (tied for second), 206 shots faced (second), 26 goals allowed (fourth) and a program-record 1922:58 minutes in goal.
The Raptors’ only other senior, captain Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) closed her three-year Rutgers-Camden career with 62 games played (tied for eighth). She also had six goals and 10 assists for 22 career points, including four goals, five assists and 13 points this season.
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) finished the season as the Lady Raptors’ leading scorer with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists. She paced the team in goals and was tied for the assist lead with freshman midfielder Vanessa Maia (Union, NJ/Union).
As a team, not only did the Raptors set a single-season mark with 11 shutouts, but they also had a team-record shutout string of 476:59 from Oct. 10-28. Cargen was in goal for 386:59 of that string and also posted a program-record streak of 625:32 scoreless minutes from the field of play from Oct. 3-28, allowing only one goal on a penalty kick in that span.

Rutgers-Camden women advance
to ECAC Metro soccer semifinals
CAMDEN (Nov. 7, 2007) – Rutgers University-Camden made program history as it advanced to a semifinal berth in the ECAC Division III Metro Women’s Soccer Championship here Wednesday.
The third-seeded Lady Raptors edged No. 6 seed St. Joseph’s College-Patchogue, 1-0, in a first-round ECAC tournament game to record the first post-season victory in program history. The Raptors’ historical win came with another milestone as the team achieved its 11th shutout of the season, setting a new program record.
Rutgers-Camden, 11-7-4, advances to the ECAC Metro semifinals Saturday, where it will play at #2 Centenary College at 1 p.m. Centenary defeated #7 College of Staten Island, 5-0, in another first-round game Wednesday.
With their fifth shutout in the last six games, the Lady Raptors hiked their program record to 11 shutouts on the season, one more than the mark they shared with the 2003 and 2005 teams. It was the seventh individual shutout for senior goalie Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), who now owns nine career shutouts. Cargen, who made four saves on the day, is one behind the career mark of 10 shutouts held by Therese Comella (2004-05).
Rutgers-Camden scored the only goal it needed in the first half when freshman forward Jessica Ramirez (Union, NJ/Union) headed in a corner kick off the foot of her old high school teammate, freshman midfielder Vanessa Maia (Union, NJ/Union). It was the fifth goal of the season for Ramirez and her second game-winning tally. With her seventh assist, Maia is now tied for the team assist lead with sophomore Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional).
The goal by Ramirez helped the Raptors produce their first post-season win. The Lady Raptors’ program, which started in 1998, had been 0-6 in post-season action since 2002, including a loss Oct. 28 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs. That 0-6 mark included an 0-4 record in the NJAC playoffs and an 0-2 log in the ECAC tournament before Wednesday.
The Lady Raptors out-shot the Golden Eagles, 11-8, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Dana Carney (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) made five saves for St. Joseph’s-Patchogue, which closes its season at 13-7-2.
Rutgers-Camden improved to 5-0 all-time against St. Joseph’s-Patchogue, including a 4-0 mark in the yearly series played from 2002-2005.

Lady Raptors’ Leoni, Mancine
earn All-NJAC soccer honors
CAMDEN (Nov. 7, 2007) – Rutgers University-Camden sophomore Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) and senior Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) were honored today with their selections to the New Jersey Athletic Conference All-Conference Women’s Soccer Team.
Leoni was selected as one of the forwards on the All-NJAC Second Team, while Mancine was tabbed as one of the Honorable Mention backs.
Both Leoni and Mancine were repeat selections on the all-conference team, having been tabbed as 2006 All-NJAC Honorable Mention players.
The versatile Leoni, who can play anywhere from the back to the midfield and up top, is the Lady Raptors’ leading scorer this season. She has collected nine goals and seven assists for 25 points, including four game-winning goals for Rutgers-Camden, which brings a 10-7-4 record into its first-round ECAC Division III Metro tournament game this afternoon. The Lady Raptors host St. Joseph’s College-Patchogue at 4 p.m.
Leoni was named the school’s Raptor of the Week on Oct. 8 and added a national honor on Oct. 9 when she was named to the d3kicks.com Team of the Week. That honor came after she scored three goals and added four assists for 10 points in three games from Oct. 1-8. She had two goals, including the game-winning tally, and two assists against Lancaster Bible College on Oct. 1 and added a goal and two assists, including the game-winning assist, against Medgar Evers College, Oct. 6. She also collected a pair of goals as the Raptors posted a 3-0 win at Albright College Oct. 8.
Leoni has appeared in 39 career games in her two seasons with the Lady Raptors, starting 38. She has scored 15 goals and added 10 assists for 40 points, a total that already ranks her ninth on the program’s career scoring list.
Mancine, the 2007 team captain, has had another fine year while anchoring a defense which has posted 10 shutouts, tied with the 2003 and 2005 teams for the most in program history. In 20 games, all starts, she has collected four goals and five assists for 13 points, fourth on the team in scoring.
Mancine transferred to Rutgers-Camden after a stellar season at Camden County College in 2004, where she earned All-Region XIX First Team honors and was named to the NJCAA Division III All-America Second Team. She was tabbed as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week and added honors as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 17, 2006. The next day, she was recognized as the ECAC Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week.
During her three years at Rutgers-Camden, Mancine has played in 60 games (tied for 11th on the career list) and has scored six goals and added 10 assists for 22 points. During the last three seasons she has contributed to 27 shutouts.
Rutgers-Camden women ready
for ECAC Metro soccer playoffs
CAMDEN (Nov. 5, 2007) – The young Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team played its best soccer of the year during a late-season run to the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Lady Raptors, who feature 17 sophomores and freshmen on their 20-player roster, have been rewarded for their fine season with a berth in the ECAC Division III Women’s Metro Soccer Championship.
Rutgers-Camden, 10-7-4, will be the third seed in the ECAC Metro tournament and host a first-round game Wednesday against No. 6 St. Joseph’s College-Patchogue (13-6-2). The game time will be 4 p.m.
The Lady Raptors went 6-0-1 to end the regular season, with the only blemish coming against New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Richard Stockton College, which qualified for a NCAA tournament berth. The Raptors’ unbeaten streak was snapped by Stockton in the NJAC tournament, with the Ospreys posting a 2-0 victory Oct. 28 in Pomona. Stockton has advanced to the NCAA tournament.
Rutgers-Camden has posted 10 shutouts this season, including four in the last five games, as the Raptors tied their single-season team shutout mark set in 2003 and duplicated in 2005. Senior goalie Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) owns six shutouts and a 1.24 goals-against average, while compiling an 8-7-4 record.
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) leads the Lady Raptors’ offense with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points.
Rutgers-Camden has played in two previous ECAC Metro Tournaments, going 0-2 in a pair of road games. They lost to Richard Stockton College (2-0) in 2002 and lost at Farmingdale State (2-1) last season. Wednesday’s game will be the Lady Raptors’ first home tournament game since their lone post-season home contest, a 2-1 loss to Rowan University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs on Nov. 3, 2003.
Rutgers-Camden and St. Joseph’s-Patchogue have met on four previous occasions, with the Raptors holding a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series, which was played yearly from 2002-2005. Rutgers-Camden won the last game, 1-0, in Camden on Oct. 8, 2005.

Stockton eliminates Lady Raptors
from NJAC soccer playoffs
POMONA (Oct. 28, 2007) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team entered its New Jersey Athletic Conference First Round playoff game on a long roll that included a seven-game unbeaten streak and six shutouts in that span.
The only team to score on the Raptors during that streak was Richard Stockton College, and the third-seeded Ospreys ended the streak and the Lady Raptors’ NJAC playoff dreams here Sunday afternoon.
Stockton, ranked No. 22 in the country in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll, collected a pair of second-half goals to eliminate the Lady Raptors, 2-0. The Ospreys (17-2-2) advance to Tuesday’s NJAC semifinal game at second-seeded Rowan University, while Rutgers-Camden (10-7-4) awaits word of a possible ECAC tournament berth in early November.
Rutgers-Camden, which had allowed only one goal in its last seven games – a 1-1 tie at Stockton Oct. 10 with the Ospreys’ lone tally coming on a penalty kick – saw its team-record shutout string improve to 476:59, breaking the mark of 457:50 set Sept. 1-22, 2004. The string was snapped, however, when Stockton freshman forward Leah Pocoroba (Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) broke a scoreless deadlock at 75:39, notching the winning goal at the far post off a cross from Shelley Gibney (Shamong, NJ/Seneca). The Ospreys added an insurance goal at 83:57 when Laura O’Shea (Petersburg, NJ/Ocean City) headed home a feed from Courtney Dougherty (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City).
The Raptors’ 6-0-1 streak included four straight shutouts, which raised their team total to 10, tying the single-season program records from 2003 and 2005. Senior goalie Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) increased her scoreless streak to 386:59, dating back to Stockton’s penalty kick in the Oct. 10 game, before Pocoroba’s game-winning goal. Cargen also extended her program-record streak of scoreless minutes from the field of play – sandwiched around the penalty kick -- to 625:32.
The Ospreys out-shot the Raptors, 18-3, including 8-1 in the decisive second half. Cargen made six saves for Rutgers-Camden, with five coming in the opening 45 minutes when Stockton held a 10-2 advantage in shots. The Ospreys also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.
Richard Stockton junior goalie Alex Rogers (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) collected the shutout with two saves.
Lady Raptors' NJAC playoff game
postponed until Sunday
CAMDEN (Oct. 26, 2007) -- The Rutgers-Camden women's soccer team has had its New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff opener delayed by weather. The Lady Raptors, who were suppoed to play a first-round NJAC game at Richard Stockton College Saturday afternoon, will play the game at Stockton on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden earns playoff berth
with 1-0 win over New Jersey City
CAMDEN (Oct. 25, 2007) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team had to endure a day’s wait, a rainout, a change of venue and a delayed start, but the troubles were worth the wait for the Scarlet Raptors, who qualified for the sixth and final berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs Thursday afternoon at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
Rutgers-Camden toppled New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a game which was originally slated to be played in Jersey City on Wednesday, was postponed by rain and then moved Thursday morning to Camden due to unplayable fields at NJCU.
The revised game starting time was 4 p.m., but the action didn’t begin until 4:56 p.m. due to the Gothic Knights’ late arrival after their bus got lost. That was only the beginning of a strange contest in which NJCU played nearly the entire game with only 10 players, due to an injury-depleted roster, until the Gothic Knights lost another player on a red card with 5:57 remaining after an on-field fight.
The victory raised the Raptors’ record to 3-4-2 in the NJAC, vaulting them past Ramapo College and into the final NJAC playoff berth. The sixth-seeded Raptors will begin the conference playoffs Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. game at No. 3 seed Richard Stockton College. The Raptors and the Ospreys tied, 1-1, in Pomona on Oct. 10. That result is the only blemish in a seven-game string (6-0-1) which has pushed Rutgers-Camden’s overall record to 10-6-4.
New Jersey City closes its season at 7-11 overall and 0-9 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Camden scored the only goal it needed when freshman Christina Vitagliano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) tucked a shot inside the left post at 15:02 for her first collegiate goal. She was assisted by senior captain Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who notched her fifth assist of the season.
The rest of the contest was anchored by the Lady Raptors’ strong defense, which posted its 10th shutout of the season to tie the program record set in 2003 and tied again in 2005. That effort included an outstanding job by freshman back Kate Weidner (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional), who held the Gothic Knights’ dangerous freshman forward Jennifer Albuja (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) in check. Albuja finished her maiden season with 24 goals, the single-season program record and only one shy of the NJCU overall soccer record, set in 2004 by the men’s Chris Rosenthal.
The Raptors’ outstanding defense was aided by sophomore Heather Thom (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional), junior Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran) and freshman Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield), who helped shut down Albuja and the Gothic Knights. Senior goalie Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made four saves for the Raptors – three off Albuja shots – to earn her sixth shutout and increase her scoreless streak to 311:20, dating back to a penalty kick by Stockton in the Oct. 10 game. Cargen also set a record by extending her streak of scoreless minutes from the field of play – sandwiched around the penalty kick -- to 549:53, breaking the mark of 513:40 by Tracy Winter in 2003.
As a team, the Raptors have gone 401:20 without allowing a goal since Stockton’s PK, posting four straight shutouts. They have six shutouts in their last seven games.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot NJCU, 17-6, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Gothic Knights freshman keeper Kelly Reilly (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) made seven saves.
Makeup game against NJCU
moved to Rutgers-Camden today
CAMDEN (Oct. 25, 2007) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer game at New Jersey City University, postponed from Wednesday due to rain, was switched to a game in Camden this morning due to poor field conditions in Jersey City. The game will begin at 4 p.m. this afternoon and will decide the Lady Raptors' post-season fate. If Rutgers-Camden wins, the Raptors secure the sixth and final spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs, where they would play a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday at third-seeded Richard Stockton College. If the Raptors tie or lose against New Jersey City, Ramapo College will earn the sixth seed for the tournament.
Rutgers-Camden women post
3-0 win over Staten Island
CAMDEN (Oct. 22, 2007) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team out-shot the College of Staten Island, 35-3, on its way to a 3-0 victory in a non-conference game Monday night at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
The Lady Raptors improved to 9-6-4, including 5-0-1 in their last six games, while the Dolphins fell to 9-8.
The Raptors held an 18-0 advantage in shots during the first half, but were continually thwarted by missed opportunities and the strong play of Staten Island junior goalie Tina Bellocchio (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa). Bellocchio made seven saves in the opening half and 20 in the game, but the Raptors’ lone first-half goal came when a ball bounced over her head into the net. That play came at 24:23 following a long chip into the box by Raptor junior back Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran). The high-bouncing ball produced Gatti’s second goal of the season and first game-winning tally.
After holding that 1-0 lead most of the way, Rutgers-Camden finally added a pair of insurance goals at 70:10 and 73:26, both assisted by senior captain Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). Freshman forward Jordan Wright (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) scored her seventh goal of the season with a shot over Bellocchio following a long through ball, and freshman midfielder Vanessa Maia (Union, NJ/Union) tacked on the final tally. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Both Wright (seven goals, no assists) and Maia (four goals, six assists) are tied for second on the team in scoring with 14 points.
Defensively, freshman goalie Danielle Bove (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) made only one save to notch her first career shutout and raise her record to 2-0. It was the ninth shutout of the season for Rutgers-Camden, one shy of the season mark set in 2003 and tied in 2005.
Rutgers-Camden closes its regular season Wednesday with a key New Jersey Athletic Conference game at New Jersey City University, beginning at 3 p.m. If the Lady Raptors defeat the Gothic Knights, they have a shot to qualify for the six-team NJAC playoffs, which begin Saturday.
The College of Staten Island has already clinched the top seed in both the CUNYAC and HVWAC tournaments and will play in the HVWAY quarterfinals Sunday, with an opponent and time to be determined.
Rutgers-Camden women win
to keep NJAC playoff hopes alive
MAHWAH (Oct. 20, 2007) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team is making a late-season bid for a New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff berth, and the Lady Raptors kept their hopes alive here Saturday afternoon.
Freshmen forwards Jessica Ramirez (Union, NJ/Union) and Jordan Wright (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) each scored second-half goals to lead the Raptors past Ramapo, 2-0.
With one more game remaining, the Lady Raptors now own a 2-4-2 record in the NJAC, good for eighth points (three for a win, one for a tie), while Ramapo is 3-4-1 (10 points). Rutgers-Camden stands in eighth place in the NJAC standings after William Paterson defeated Rutgers-Newark 3-0 Saturday night, but the Lady Raptors still have a shot for the sixth and final playoff spot when the NJAC wraps up its regular season on Wednesday.
Rutgers-Camden plays a 3 p.m. game at New Jersey City University Wednesday, while Ramapo plays at Montclair State (7 p.m.) and Paterson plays at Kean (7:30 p.m.). The Lady Raptors can clinch the sixth playoff spot, no matter what happens between Kean and Paterson, if Rutgers-Camden wins and Ramapo either ties or loses. A Ramapo win or a Rutgers-Camden loss would eliminate the Raptors.
In the win over Ramapo (10-7-1 overall), the Roadrunners held a 10-2 advantage in shots during the first half, but were kept off the scoreboard by six saves from Lady Raptor senior goalkeeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Cargen, who was honored this past week as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, the ECAC Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week and as a member of the national d3kicks.com Team of the Week, posted her fifth shutout of the season, making 11 saves and also being aided by a backsave.
Cargen extended her streak of scoreless minutes from the field of play to 459:53, dating back to a loss at Widener University Oct. 3. The only goal she has allowed since then came on a penalty shot by Richard Stockton College in a 1-1 tie Oct. 10. She has posted 221:20 scoreless minutes since then.
Ramapo nearly scored on a penalty shot here Saturday, but the shot banged off the post with eight minutes remaining in regulation. By that time, the Lady Raptors held a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals by Ramirez and Wright.
Ramirez broke open the scoreless deadlock at 64:07, slipping through the defense to score an unassisted goal for her fourth tally of the season. It was her first game-winning goal.
The Raptors, who have gone 4-0-1 in their last five games to hike their record to 8-6-4, took a two-goal edge at 69:59 when Wright finished a shot off the post by freshman forward Lindy Iannacone (Riverton, NJ/Palmyra). It was Wright’s sixth goal on the season.
The Roadrunners held a 19-8 advantage in shots, while both teams had four corner kicks.
Ramapo sophomore goalie Jessica DaRold (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) made three saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game against the College of Staten Island. It will be the Lady Raptors’ final home game of the season.
Lady Raptors’ Cargen completes
sweep of weekly women’s soccer honors
CAMDEN (Oct. 17, 2007) – Rutgers University-Camden senior goalkeeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) has completed her sweep of weekly women’s soccer honors by capturing the ECAC Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week award.

Cargen’s latest honor comes for her performance Oct. 8-13, in which she collected a pair of shutouts and allowed only one goal – on a penalty kick – while setting the single-game program record with 17 saves against Richard Stockton College (Oct. 10). Her performance against the Ospreys helped Rutgers-Camden tie Stockton, 1-1, in a double-overtime conference game in Pomona.
Cargen notched a pair of 3-0 shutouts, making four saves to beat Albright College (Oct. 8) and six saves in a conference victory over William Paterson University (Oct. 13). For the week, she had 27 saves in 290 minutes, while allowing only the one PK goal, which came following a handball call at Stockton.
That week helped Cargen earn Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week honor on Monday, and then add honors as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week later in the day.
On Tuesday, Cargen was named as a member of the d3kicks.com Team of the Week, a weekly honor for Division III soccer players selected by the national on-line web site. She is the second Lady Raptor in as many weeks to earn national recognition, following the selection to the d3kicks.com team by sophomore midfielder Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) on Oct. 9.
The penalty kick by Stockton snapped Cargen’s scoreless string at 248:33, but she extended her streak of scoreless minutes from the field of play to 369:53 by the end of the week.
Cargen’s 1,472:58 in goal this season is the second-highest single-season total in program history and she ranks second on the career list for
goalie minutes (2823:33). She ranks first in career goals-against average (1.31), is tied for first in ties (5), is second in saves (155) and is fifth in wins (13).
A four-year varsity soccer letterwinner at Cherry Hill High School East, Kristen is the daughter of Eileen Groark and Thomas Cargen of Cherry Hill.
Rutgers-Camden, which has gone 3-0-1 in its last four games, is 7-6-4 on the season and is idle until Saturday, when it plays a 1 p.m. NJAC game at Ramapo College.
Leoni, Maia spark Rutgers-Camden
to 3-0 win over William Paterson
CAMDEN (Oct. 13, 2007) – Sophomore midfielder Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) collected a goal and an assist and freshman midfielder Vanessa Maia (Union, NJ/Union) notched two assists as the Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer team defeated William Paterson University, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
The Lady Raptors improved their record to 7-6-4 overall and 1-4-2 with their first conference win of the season. The Pioneers fell to 6-7 and 2-4.
Leoni increased her team-leading totals to nine goals and four game-winning goals when she scored at 13:24, after being sprung down the left touchline on a long pass from junior back Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran). Leoni carried the ball down the line, cut inside and launched a shot into the far upper right corner.
The Lady Raptors padded their lead at 54:04 when freshman forward Jessica Ramirez (Union, NJ/Union) scored her third goal of the season from a scramble in front of the net, following a corner kick by Maia and a feed from freshman back Christina Vitagliano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West).
The final goal came off the foot of captain Brittney Mancine (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who along with goalie Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) was honored on Senior Night. Mancine collected her fourth tally of the season at 59:10 on a high shot under the crossbar from the top of the box, following a pair of quick passes from Maia and Leoni.
Despite the score, the Raptors only held a 12-11 edge in shots, including an 8-4 margin in the second half. Paterson, meanwhile, had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Cargen made six saves to notch her fourth shutout of the season and run her streak of scoreless minutes from the field of play to 369:53. The only goal she allowed in that span came on a penalty kick at Richard Stockton College Wednesday night.
Paterson sophomore goalie Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) also collected six saves.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at the College of Staten Island.
The Lady Raptors are idle until Oct. 20, when they play a 1 p.m. NJAC game at Ramapo College.

POMONA (Oct. 10, 2007) – Senior goalkeeper Kristen Cargen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) set a Rutgers University-Camden women’s soccer record with 17 saves to help the Lady Raptors post a 1-1 tie in double overtime in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Richard Stockton College here Wednesday night.
The Raptors, who were out-shot by a 32-3 margin, hung on for the tie as Cargen posted her 17 saves, including two in each of the overtime periods, to preserve the tie. She broke the program’s single-game record of 16 saves set by teammate Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran) against the College of New Jersey on Sept. 27, 2006.
Stockton, which received three votes toward the d3kicks.com Top 25 poll this week and has been ranked as high as No. 22 nationally in the NSCAA/adidas poll this season, stands at 11-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Camden, which is 6-6-4 overall and 0-4-2 in the conference, is 1-6-2 in the all-time series against the Ospreys.
The Lady Raptors were out-shot, 12-3, in the opening half, but managed to score the game’s first goal only 55 seconds before the break on a tally by freshman Jessica Ramirez (Union, NJ/Union). It was the second goal of the season for Ramirez. She was assisted by sophomore Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional), who earlier in the week was named to the national d3kicks.com Team of the Week.
The rest of the game, the Ospreys held a commanding 20-0 advantage in shots, but managed to score only one goal. That tally came on a penalty kick by Katie Henderson (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) at 78:40, after the Raptors were called for a handball in the box. Henderson’s goal snapped a string of 248:33 consecutive scoreless minutes by Cargen, the fifth-longest string in school history, but she ended up playing the full 110 minutes without allowing a goal from the field of play, extending her non-penalty kick scoreless streak to 279:53.
The Ospreys had plenty of chances to break that deadlock, but Val Davison (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) hit the post on a 12-yard shot in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Cargen made a pair of game-saving saves against Courtney Dougherty (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) and on the follow-up shot off the rebound of that save, which was taken by Shelley Gibney (Shamong, NJ/Seneca).
While Cargen had a busy night with her 17 saves, Stockton keeper Danielle Nettleton (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) didn’t make a save in her first start of the season.
