Baldiserra, Graves power
Rutgers-Camden past John Jay
CAMDEN (Oct. 9, 2006) – Junior midfielder Pat Baldiserra (Milmay, NJ/Buena Regional) collected one goal and four assists and senior forward Evan Graves (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) notched a hat trick to power the Rutgers University-Camden men’s soccer team over John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 8-0, in a non-conference game here Monday.
Rutgers-Camden, which has gone 7-1-2 in its last 10 games, improves to 8-3-3 on the season. John Jay College falls to 2-10-1.
Baldiserra’s four assists tied the Rutgers-Camden single-game record set by Mike Zeno against Holy Family on Oct. 7, 1995. Graves’ hat trick, meanwhile, was the second collected by the Scarlet Raptors this season. Sophomore Andrew Dorsey (Mt. Laurel, NJ/The King’s Christian School) had one in a 3-1 win over Kean University Sept. 23.
The eight goals were the most scored by Rutgers-Camden since a 9-0 win over York (NY) College on Sept. 3, 2005.
Baldiserra assisted on the first two goals of the game to give the Raptors a 2-0 halftime lead. He had a cross for a header by junior Onur Yilmaz (Delran, NJ/Delran) at 9:08, and a through ball for a goal by Graves at 34:53.
Baldiserra added another assist right after halftime on a goal by Dorsey at 48:24, then added a goal of his own off a set piece at the top of the box. It was assisted by junior Rob Gambino (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Yilmaz.
Graves scored his second goal of the day, tapping in a cross by freshman Mark Gidjunis (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) at 59:03.
Baldiserra assisted on a goal by junior Chris Amato (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) at 62:39.
Graves completed his hat trick at 64:41 off a through ball from freshman Dom Crocetti (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross), and the Raptors closed out their scoring at 67:16 on the first career goal by freshman Pat Morris (Bellmawr, NJ/Paul VI). Dorsey collected an assist on the goal.
The Raptors received a combination shutout from junior Brent Grunow (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) and freshman Corey McDonough (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic), who each played one half. Grunow made the lone Raptor save in the first half.
For John Jay, keeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia/South Side) had seven saves as Rutgers-Camden out-shot the Bloodhounds, 24-5.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday when they play an 7 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Richard Stockton College. The 7 p.m. time is a change from the originally-scheduled 8 p.m. start. John Jay hosts Centenary College in a 6 p.m. game the same day.
