Reed’s header lifts Rutgers-Camden
to 1-0 NJAC win over TCNJ

CAMDEN (Sept. 27, 2006) – Senior midfielder Michael Reed (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) headed in the lone goal of the game off a corner kick by junior midfielder Rob Gambino (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) to lift the Rutgers University-Camden men’s soccer team over The College of New Jersey, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

The contest was a rematch of last year’s NJAC championship game in Ewing, which was won by the Lions, 1-0, on November 5. The Lions also won the regular-season contest, 2-1, at TCNJ Oct. 1. Prior to Wednesday night, the last Rutgers-Camden win in the series was Oct. 2, 2004 in Camden (1-0 in the first overtime).

Rutgers-Camden improves to 5-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the NJAC. TCNJ falls to 3-5-1 and 1-3.

In a well-played game, the Raptors notched the lone goal at 76:24 when Reed headed in his third goal of the season.

TCNJ applied late pressure in an attempt to tie the game, but their best shot, a bullet by senior forward Matt Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) was batted clear of the goal on a leaping save by Raptor junior goalie Brent Grunow (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) with 2:10 remaining in regulation.

Grunow made seven saves for the Raptors, while TCNJ junior keeper Matt Kasperavicius (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) didn’t need to make a save.

The Lions outshot the Raptors, 14-10, in the contest, with many of the shots coming in the last 15 minutes. TCNJ held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams return to NJAC action with 1 p.m. games Saturday. Rutgers-Camden travels to Montclair State University, the nation’s 11th-ranked team. TCNJ hosts Rutgers-Newark.
