Dorsey’s hat trick lifts Rutgers-Camden
to 3-1 NJAC win over Kean University
CAMDEN (Sept. 23, 2006) – Sophomore forward Andrew Dorsey (Mt. Laurel, NJ/The King’s Christian School) collected a hat trick to power the Rutgers University-Camden men’s soccer team over Kean University, 3-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 4-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the NJAC, while Kean stands at 4-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.
Dorsey, who raised his season output to six goals, collected the first hat trick at Rutgers-Camden since Tom Magoffin had three goals in an 8-0 win over Neumann College Oct. 30, 2002. It was the Raptors’ first hat trick against an NJAC team since Brian Hobson scored three goals in a 4-1 win over Jersey City State (now New Jersey City University) Sept. 25, 1996.
Dorsey’s output helped the Raptors stave off the Cougars, who held a 15-5 advantage in shots, a 6-0 margin in corner kicks and the territorial edge most of the game. It was Rutgers-Camden, however, which notched the first goal as junior midfielder Pat Baldiserra (Milmay, NJ/Buena Regional) slid a through ball into the box for Dorsey, who fired a shot to the top left corner at 8:11.
Dorsey struck again in the second half at 59:04. Sophomore A.J. O’Malley (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) sent a cross to the far post, which Dorsey finished with a diving header. It was the first point of his career for O’Malley, who also made an outstanding defensive play later in the game to thwart a dangerous Cougar opportunity.
Kean’s pressure finally resulted in a goal at 84:19, when sophomore Anthony Tuesta (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) beat Scarlet Raptor junior keeper Brent Grunow (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) in a one-on-one in the box. Tuesta, who entered the game tied for the NJAC goal-scoring lead with six, was sprung by a through ball from sophomore forward Jorge Aguilar (Paterson, NJ/Passaic Tech).
Dorsey added a huge insurance goal with 2:23 remaining. He ran onto a chip into the box from senior forward Evan Graves (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) and beat Kean junior keeper Kyle Crego (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) to the ball for a short pop into the net.
Grunow, who relieved injured senior starter David Cunningham (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) early in the game, turned in an outstanding effort, making six saves and breaking up many other Kean scoring threats.
Crego went the distance in goal for the Cougars, allowing three goals without a save.
Both teams return to NJAC action with home games Wednesday night. Rutgers-Camden hosts defending conference champion The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m. Kean entertains NJAC power New Jersey City University at 7:30 p.m.
