Anthes lifts #11 Montclair State
to 2-1 win over Rutgers-Camden
MONTCLAIR (Sept. 30, 2006) – Senior midfielder Bill Anthes (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored both goals, including the game-winner off a header with 2:50 remaining to power the nationally-ranked Montclair State University men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks, ranked No. 11 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III Top 25 poll, improve to 11-0 on the season, their best start since 1969. They lead the NJAC with a 5-0 record.
Rutgers-Camden, which falls to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NJAC, entered the day as one of only three undefeated teams in conference play.
Senior Todd Tumelty (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) assisted on Anthes’ winning goal, which came on a header off of a corner kick. It was his 10th goal of the season and his second multi-goal game of the week.
Anthes scored the game’s first goal with an unassisted tally at 26:34, lofting a shot over Raptor junior goalie Brent Grunow (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional), who was off the goal line following a punt. The Red Hawks held that lead until 68:11, when freshman midfielder Dom Crocetti (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) scored his first collegiate goal. He scored on a header, assisted by junior midfielder Rodney Guishard (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), who kept the ball alive in the box following a corner kick.
Grunow made six saves for the Raptors, while MSU netminder Nick Mele (Delran, NJ/Delran) had two saves.
The Red Hawks held an 11-8 advantage in shots, while the Scarlet Raptors had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. when it hosts non-conference foe Arcadia University.
