Tri-captain Rodney Guishard returns for his senior season at Rutgers-Camden after establishing himself as one of the top student-athletes in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Guishard finished third on the Raptors in scoring as a junior tri-captain, notching six goals and six assists for 18 points. He also captured three big academic honors, including a berth on the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District 2 Men’s Soccer First Team. He was named NJAC Academic Honorable Mention for the second straight season and added a berth on the second annual Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Soccer Team.
Guishard had two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal, in a 3-0 win over Neumann College Sept. 6. In the Scarlet Raptors’ own Cialella Soccer Classic, he assisted on the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Alvernia (Sept. 8) and notched the tying goal in a 1-1 deadlock with Wesley College (Sept. 9). He was named to the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team and his big week gave him recognition as Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week on Sept. 11. The next day he received national recognition from a first-year soccer website when he was named to the second weekly d3kicks.com Team of the Week.
With a knack of scoring clutch goals, Guishard had a team-leading four game-winning goals in 2006, raising his career total to seven game winners. He also owns 15 goals, 13 assists and 43 points in his career, and his 62 games played place him within striking distance of the school record of 80, set by Brandon Bond (2002-2005).
In addition to the winning goal over Neumann, Guishard had the game-winning goal against conference powerhouse Richard Stockton College, scoring at 52:10 to produce a 1-0 win Oct. 11. He scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory at No. 22-ranked New Jersey City University Oct. 25, then victimized NJCU again in the ECAC Metro championship game (Nov. 12), scoring with 8:55 remaining to give the Raptors a 1-0 win.
One of Guishard’s six assists came as the Raptors tied Rowan, 2-2, with 1:01 remaining in regulation Sept. 20. In addition to his assists against Neumann and Alvernia, he also had assists against Albright (Sept. 12), Montclair State (Sept. 30) and City College of New York (Nov. 9 in the ECAC Metro tournament).
Guishard finished fifth on the Raptors in scoring as a sophomore, collecting five goals and three assists for 13 points. Two of his goals were game-winning tallies. He also earned NJAC Academic Honorable Mention recognition. He was Rutgers-Camden’s first Raptor of the Week during the 2005-06 school year, winning the award on Sept. 5 after scoring a goal in each of the team’s first two games: a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown College (Sept. 1, scoring the game-winner with 18:07 remaining to beat the 22nd-ranked Blue Jays) and a 9-0 victory over York College (Sept. 3).
Guishard also scored the game-winning goal, and added an assist, in a 3-1 victory over Rowan University (Sept. 21). That win marked only the second time that Rutgers-Camden ever defeated Rowan.
Guishard’s other goals came in a 3-0 victory over Delaware Valley College (Oct. 3) and a 5-0 triumph over No. 8-ranked Ramapo College (Oct. 26). He also had an assist in back-to-back games against William Paterson University (Oct. 17) and Franklin & Marshall College (Oct. 19).
Guishard finished fourth on the team in scoring as a freshman in 2004, producing four goals and four assists for 12 points. One of his goals proved to be the deciding tally in a 2-0 win over Lincoln University (Oct. 4).
Guishard made his collegiate debut at Elizabethtown College (Sept. 1) and earned the first of his four starts in a game against Alvernia (Sept. 5). Guishard notched his first collegiate points with a goal against Philadelphia Biblical University (Sept. 25). That tally sparked a run which saw him score 12 points over a 12-game span.
Guishard had a career-high two assists in a 7-0 win over Delaware Valley College (Sept. 27), and assisted on Tom Blumenstein’s game-winning overtime goal in a 1-0 victory against The College of New Jersey (Oct. 2). He had three points (one goal, one assist) in a 4-0 win over Albright (Oct. 19) and added a goal in a 3-0 victory against Ramapo (Oct. 27).
Guishard served as team captain eight times during his scholastic career at Oakcrest High School: three times apiece in soccer and track, and twice in basketball. During his senior soccer season, he scored 30 goals and added 12 assists on his way to earning First Team All-South Jersey honors from the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was named to the Cape-Atlantic League American Division First Team, earned Third Team honors from the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association and also added First Team All-Group 3 from the Courier-Post. He earned Second Team All-Group 3 honors during both his sophomore and junior soccer seasons and was First Team all-conference as a junior. He also was First Team all-conference in track and Second Team all-conference in basketball. As a senior, the Courier-Postnamed him Second Team All-South Jersey in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and First Team All-Group 3 at 800 meters. He also finished sixth in the state in the hurdles and ninth in the 800 meters.
Overall, Guishard earned four scholastic varsity letters apiece in soccer and track, and added three in basketball. He also was a National Honor Society student at Oakcrest.
An active member of Rutgers-Camden’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Guishard served as the SAAC co-chair during the 2006-07 scholastic year.
A Marketing major who has been a Dean’s List student all six semesters at Rutgers-Camden, Rodney is the son of Rodney and Helen Guishard of Mays Landing.
