Brent Grunow had another fine season as a goalie for the Scarlet Raptors in 2006, appearing in seven games, starting four, and finishing second on the squad with 436:57 minutes in goal. He posted a 2-2 record and a 0.82 goals-against average. He also collected one solo shutout and played in four of the Raptors’ 10 team shutouts during the season.
Overall, Grunow was part of the Scarlet Raptors’ defense which posted a 0.70 team goals-against average, the second-lowest season total in program history.
Grunow turned in a fine performance in the Scarlet Raptors’ season opener, making eight saves as Rutgers-Camden lost a 1-0 decision at Merchant Marine (Sept. 2). Merchant Marine, a perennial powerhouse, was ranked as high as No. 23 nationally during the year in the NSCAA/adidas Division III poll.
Grunow’s other loss also came against a national power on the road, when Rutgers lost a 2-1 decision at Montclair State University (Sept. 30). The Red Hawks, who were ranked No. 11 nationally at the time, went on to capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference title and finish No. 13 in the final NSCAA/adidas Division III poll. Grunow made six saves against Montclair State.
The first shutout of Grunow’s career came in a 1-0 victory over The College of New Jersey (Sept. 27). He made seven saves to beat the defending NJAC champions. He faced 14 shots against the Lions, tying his Rutgers-Camden career high set four days earlier while playing 81:40 in a game against Kean University, taking over for injured starter David Cunningham. Although he didn’t get the decision in that 3-1 victory over the Cougars, he turned in one of his best performances, making six saves against a strong Kean attack.
Grunow collected his second win by playing the first half of an 8-0 victory over John Jay College of Criminal Justice (Oct. 9). He made one save in his 45 minutes of playing time. He also contributed to team shutouts against Rutgers-Newark (playing 18:59 with one save in a 5-0 victory Sept. 16) and against City College of New York (21:18 with no saves in another 5-0 win Nov. 9).
Entering his senior season, Grunow owns a 7-4 record and a 1.46 goals-against average over his two-year career at Rutgers-Camden. He has played in 20 games, starting 11, while making 62 saves in 1108:04 minutes.
Grunow appeared in 13 games during his first season with the Scarlet Raptors in 2005, making seven starts and posting a 5-2 record. He made 33 saves and recorded a 1.88 goals-against average.
A transfer from Camden County College, Grunow collected a victory in his first Rutgers-Camden game, playing all 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory over powerful Elizabethtown College in the Raptors’ season opener Sept. 1. He made five saves against the Blue Jays, who entered the contest ranked No. 22 nationally in the pre-season Division III poll.
Grunow, who started the Raptors’ first four games of the season while David Cunningham was recovering from an injury, also earned early-season victories in a 9-0 win over York College Sept. 3 and a 4-1 win over Philadelphia Biblical University Sept. 6. In the win over PBU, he collected his season high of six saves.
Grunow’s other victories came against Delaware Valley College Oct. 3 (a 3-0 win in which he made five saves while playing the first 74:02) and during a 4-1 triumph over Cabrini College Oct. 8 (three saves in 87:18 of playing time).
His two losses came against perennial power Arcadia University (4-0, Sept. 10) and Franklin & Marshall College (4-3, Oct. 19).
Grunow faced his season high of 13 shots on two occasions against the high-powered offenses of Elizabethtown and Arcadia. In addition to his high of six saves against PBU, he had five saves in games against Elizabethtown and Delaware Valley.
During his one season at Camden County College in 2004, Grunow earned National Junior College Athletic Association Second Team All-Region XIX honors.
Grunow had an outstanding scholastic career at Buena Regional High School, where he earned Second Team South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association, First Team Cape-Atlantic League National Division and Third Team All-State honors as a senior in 2003.
He also was named as a Second Team Cape-Atlantic National goalie during his junior year in 2002.
Grunow earned four soccer and two tennis letters at Buena Regional, where he also was a three-year National Honor Society member. He earned Cape-Atlantic League First Team honors, in addition to Second Team All-South Jersey and Third Team All-State.
