Mike Fox continued his amazing run of success during the 2007 cross country season, earning All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Second Team honors, helping the Scarlet Raptors to a second-place finish in the conference (their highest ever) and consistently running as the team’s No. 2 runner. Fox competed in six invitationals, finishing second on the Raptors four times, and posted his top 8K time of 26:42.9 at the New York University Invitational Sept. 15. That time, which helped him finish 47th overall out of 254 runners, was the ninth-fastest clocking in Rutgers-Camden program history.
Fox earned his All-NJAC Second Team honors by finishing 13th out of 53 at the conference meet Oct. 27. He posted a time of 27:08.45 as the Raptors placed second only to NJAC and national powerhouse The College of New Jersey. Prior to that race, Rutgers-Camden’s best finish in the NJAC meet was fifth place in 2006.
Fox turned the 2006-07 scholastic year into his own showcase as a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. By the time he finished the year, he had contributed to four indoor and five outdoor program records, earned three weekly Raptor of the Week honors, a pair of All-NJAC team honors and was recognized as the Most Outstanding Indoor Track Athlete at the NJAC Championships. His performance helped Fox win recognition as the school’s 2006-07 Athlete of the Year at the annual Rutgers-Camden athletic banquet in May. It was a successful return to Rutgers-Camden for Fox, who earned two letters apiece in track and cross country with the Raptors before transferring to Rutgers-New Brunswick.
During the 2006-07 indoor season, Fox set a program record at one mile (4:25.38 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational, Feb. 23) and was a member of three record-setting relay teams: the 4x400 (3:27.30, also at NYU), the Distance Medley (10:32.93) and the 4x800 (7:57.68), both at the ECAC Championships March 2 and 3, respectively. The 4x800 team finished second at the ECAC Championships.
At the NJAC Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 19), Fox earned a pair of All-Conference First Team honors by finishing first in the 800-meter race (1:58.76) and as the anchor on the winning Distance Medley (10:35.49). The dual first-place finishes earned him recognition as the Most Outstanding Male Athlete at the NJAC Indoor Meet. It also helped him capture the NJAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor on Feb. 20, the second time he won that award during the winter. He also won it on Feb. 5, and was named the ECAC Division III Track Athlete of the Week the next day, after a strong performance at the Frank Colden Invitational (Feb. 3).
Overall, Fox was a member of the 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley teams over the winter, in addition to competing at 800 meters, 1,000 meters and the mile. He earned first-place finishes in three consecutive invitationals, beginning with Lebanon Valley (Jan. 27 in the 800 and 4x800), and continuing through the Frank Colden Invitational (Feb. 3 in the 1,000 meters and 4x800) and the NJAC Championships (800 meters and distance medley).
Fox earned a pair of Raptor of the Week honors during the indoor season, winning the award on Feb. 5 and 26. He added another Raptor of the Week honor during the outdoor season (sharing the award April 30 with softball pitcher Natalie Powell). That same day he was named the NJAC Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 800-meter run at the Lions Invitational (April 28). Fox recorded a 1:52.76 clocking in that event to set a short-lived program record at 800 meters. He broke his own mark with a 1:52.60 time at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet (May 14) and was a national qualifier at 800 meters.
Fox ran on record-setting relay teams in the 4x400 (3:22.31 at the ECAC Championships, May 18), the 4x800 (8:02.85 at the Duke Invitational, April 7) and the Distance Medley (10:53.65 at the Stockton Invitational, March 24). In addition to his record at 800 meters, he also set a program mark at 1,500-meters (3:58.29 at the NJAC Championships, May 5). Fox placed third in the NJAC Championships at 1,500 meters, earning All-NJAC Honorable Mention.
Fox earned four varsity letters from his first two years at Rutgers-Camden, where he was a member of the Raptors’ cross country teams in 2002 and 2003, as well as the outdoor track teams in 2003 and 2004.
As a freshman, Fox ran in eight cross country meets, leading the Raptors in two invitationals and finishing second on the team six times. His top 8K time of 29:05 came at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships Nov. 2, 2002. In the spring, he competed in the 1,500 meters, 800 meters and 4x400 relay for the 2003 Rutgers-Camden track team.
During the 2003-04 school year, he ran in five cross country meets, leading the team once and finishing second four times, and set a school record of 4:03.78 at 1,500 meters during the track season. That mark, set at the Delaware Invitational April 10, 2004, stood until this past spring, when Fox lowered his own standard.
Fox also competed in the 800M, 3,000M, 10,000M and the 4x400 relay during his sophomore season.
A former First Team All-Burlington County League Liberty Division cross country runner at Rancocas Valley High School, Fox also competed in indoor and outdoor track in high school, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
