Midway through his third scholastic year at Rutgers-Camden, Jonathan Salamon has already established himself as one of the top cross country and track athletes in school history.
Salamon completed his second year on the Scarlet Raptors’ cross country team during the fall of 2007, where he earned All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Second Team honors for the second straight year by finishing 14th overall out of 53 runners at the NJAC Championships Oct. 27. His 8K time of 27:10.22 helped the Raptors place second at the conference meet, their best finish in program history. The NJAC meet was just part of a strong finishing kick to the season for Salamon, who posted his personal best 8K time of 26:53.5 at the season-ending NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals Nov. 10. He finished 98th overall out of 271 runners, and his time was the 16th-fastest clocking in program history.
Salamon has proven he can excel during every athletic season. During the 2006-07 school year, his talents made him the only Rutgers-Camden athlete to earn Raptor of the Week honors in all three seasons (fall, winter and spring), as he turned in outstanding performances weekly in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Salamon made his Rutgers-Camden cross country debut in 2006, adding to his prior success from the indoor and outdoor track seasons during the 2005-06 school year. He was the Raptors’ No. 2 runner in all eight of Rutgers-Camden’s cross country invitationals that fall, and he consistently ran among the top competitors overall. He posted his top 8K time of the season (26:59.18) at the NJAC Championships Oct. 28. He finished 14th overall out of 65 runners to earn All-NJAC Second Team honors. With his finish, Salamon joined teammate Travis Stewart as the first two All-NJAC men’s cross country runners in program history. That duo was named Rutgers-Camden’s Co-Raptors of the Week on Oct. 30.
Salamon helped lead Rutgers-Camden to the team championship of the Cabrini Cross Country Invitational Oct. 14. His time of 27:33.40 trailed only Stewart’s meet-record clocking (27:07.37) and helped Salamon finish second out of 87 runners. A week earlier he was 11th overall out of 115 runners at Goldey Beacom (Oct. 7).
During the 2006-07 indoor season, Salamon earned All-NJAC First Team honors as part of the Scarlet Raptors’ distance medley team, which won the NJAC title (Feb. 19) in a school-record 10:35.49 clocking. That record didn’t last long, as he ran on another distance medley team which posted a 10:32.93 clocking while finishing eighth at the ECAC Championships (March 2). One day later, he anchored the Raptors’ 4x800 team, which finished second at the ECAC Championships with a school-record 7:57.68 clocking. The same day, he finished sixth in the 500-meter dash in a school-record time of 1:07.36. Those feats helped him earn the school’s Raptor of the Week honor for March 5. He added honors as the NJAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week later that same day.
Salamon also ran on the record-setting 4x200 (1:42.7 at Lebanon Valley College Jan. 27) and 4x400 (3:27.30 at the NYU FastTrack Invitational, Feb. 23) teams during that indoor season.
During the 2007 spring season, Salamon earned Rutgers-Camden’s Raptor of the Week honor on April 2. He capped his outstanding semester being named Rutgers-Camden’s Outdoor Track and Field team MVP.
As a member of the 2007 outdoor track team, Salamon earned All-NJAC Second Team honors at 800 meters (1:55.12) at the conference meet May 5. He set Rutgers-Camden outdoor records at 400 meters (50.67) and as the anchor of the 4x400 (3:22.31), the 4x800 (3:24.54) and the 800 sprint medley (1:37.69) relay teams.
Salamon made his Rutgers-Camden track debut when he was named team MVP of the Scarlet Raptors’ first indoor program in 2005-06. He established two individual and two relay records in the process. He set program marks at 800 meters (1:57.46 at the ECAC Championships, March 4, 2006) and in the mile (4:33.90 at the Frank Colden Invitational, Feb. 4). He also ran on the record-setting 4x400 relay team (3:51.86) at the Frank Colden meet, teaming with Taiwan Lamb, Patrick Eigbe and Darryl Mendillo. At the NJAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 19, Salamon teamed with Stewart, Chris McGowan and Mendillo on the record-setting 4x800 relay team (8:30.13). His 800 mark, from that first season, still stands as the program record.
Salamon earned All-NJAC First Team honors during the 2006 spring track season by winning the 800-meter run in 1:58.91 at the NJAC Championships (May 6). He ran his best times at 800 meters (1:57.96) and 1,500 meters (4:14.92) at the New Jersey Invitational (April 15). He also was a member of the school record-setting distance medley relay team (11:34.62), which won the Richard Stockton Invitational (March 25).
Salamon earned three varsity letters apiece in cross country, indoor and outdoor track at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen. He earned Second Team All-Parochial A honors, the track and field team MVP award, and a Cross Country Coaches’ Award. He also captured First Team All-County relay honors and was a Red Division All-Star.
Outstanding in the classroom as well, Salamon was a National Honor Society and Art NHS student who earned High Honor Roll recognition and graduated Cum Laude.
