Rutgers-Camden ends crew season  
at prestigious Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA (May 9, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden crew program closed its season at the Dad Vail Regatta, racing three boats on the Schuylkill River here Friday.

The Lady Raptors finished sixth in their heat for the Division II/III Varsity Heavyweight Eight, posting a time of 7:29.371. Members of the boat were senior coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), sophomore stroke Stacie Hagan (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore 7-seat Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), sophomore 6-seat Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), freshman 5-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), junior 4-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI),  senior 3-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), freshman 2-seat Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental) and senior bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).

The Rutgers-Camden men’s club crew team finished third in its Varsity Heavyweight Four heat (7:05.431) and was sixth in the heat for the Frosh/Novice Four (7:49.575).

Members of the Varsity Four boat were sophomore coxswain Melissa Kendall (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), sophomore stroke Bill McGrath (Mullica Township, NJ/St. Augustine), senior 3-seat Lance Carsillo (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), sophomore 2-seat Michael Ambrose (Deptford, NJ/St. Augustine) and sophomore bow Nick Tontarski (Cedar Brook, NJ/St. Augustine).

The Frosh/Novice Four included cox Kendall, freshman stroke Jason Stelmaszyk (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), grad student Nicholas Dibble (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) at 3-seat, junior 2-seat Jason Cavanaugh (Clementon, NJ/Overbrook Regional) and junior bow Angel Roman (Camden, NJ/Leap Academy).

Rutgers-Camden Frosh/Novice Four boat  
earns silver at Mid-Atlantic Championships

OCCOQUAN, Virginia (May 4, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden Women’s Frosh/Novice Four boat captured the silver medal to highlight a strong performance by the Lady Raptors’ program at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships here Sunday.

The boat posted a time of 9:24.9367 to finish second behind winner Duquesne University. Earlier in the day the Raptors finished second in their heat – behind Duquesne – to advance to the final.

Members of the Frosh/Novice Four boat were senior coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), sophomore stroke Stacie Hagan (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), freshman 3-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore 2-seat Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), and sophomore bow Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial).

Rutgers-Camden also finished sixth in the Women’s Varsity Eight final in a time of 9:11.0667. That boat included coxswain Sanchirico, stroke Hagan, 7-seat Malony, 6-seat Brandt, 5-seat Gontowski, junior 4-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI),  senior 3-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), freshman 2-seat Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental) and senior bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).

The Scarlet Raptors also competed in a pair of events with their men’s club team, winning the Petite Final for the Men’s Varsity Four (8:53.2700) and finishing fifth in the Petite Final for the Frosh/Novice Four.

Rutgers-Camden concludes its season Friday and Saturday at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Raptors will race two men’s fours and their women’s eight.

Rutgers-Camden women’s crew competes
at Mid-Atlantic Division III Regionals

LEWISBERRY, Penn. (April 26, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s varsity crew team finished fifth in the Novice Four race to highlight the Scarlet Raptors’ competition at the Mid-Atlantic Division III Regional Championships held here Saturday at Gifford Pinchot State Park.

The Lady Raptors posted a time of 8:15.2 in the 2,000-meter race to place fifth of six boats. Members of the Lady Raptors’ boat were senior coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), sophomore stroke Stacie Hagan (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), freshman 3-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore 2-seat Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), and senior bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).

The Lady Raptors also finished fifth out of five teams in both the first heat of the Varsity Eight race (7:55.1) and the Varsity 8 Petite Final (7:49.7). Those teams consisted of coxswain Sanchirico, sophomore stroke Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), 7-seat Hagan, 6-seat Brandt, 5-seat Gontowski, junior 4-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI), senior 3-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), 2-seat Arnold and freshman bow Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental).

The Rutgers-Camden men’s club team had its top showing in the Varsity Four race, finishing third of six teams in 7:00.9 to capture the bronze medal. Sophomore coxswain Melissa Kendall (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), sophomore stroke Nick Tontarski (Cedar Brook, NJ/St. Augustine), senior 3-seat Lance Carsillo (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), sophomore 2-seat Bill McGrath (Mullica Township, NJ/St. Augustine) and freshman bow Jason Stelmaszyk (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) were members of the Raptors’ boat.

The Scarlet Raptors were third of three teams in both the Novice Eight (6:40.5) and the Varsity Eight (6:26.2) races, with the lineups almost identical for both boats. The Varsity Eight featured cox Kendall, stroke Tontarski, 7-seat Carsillo, 6-seat McGrath, 5-seat Stelmaszyk, sophomore 4-seat Michael Ambrose (Deptford, NJ/St. Augustine), junior 3-seat Efren Cazales (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), junior 2-seat Jason Cavanaugh (Clementon, NJ/Overbrook Regional) and junior bow Angel Roman (Camden, NJ/Leap Academy).

The Novice Eight had the same lineup except freshman Dan Boitel (Paramus, NJ/Bergen Catholic) sat the bow seat.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Sunday, May 4 at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships in Occoquan, Virginia.

in Knecht Cup competition

PENNSAUKEN (April 12-13, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden crew program had a busy weekend on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, where it competed in eight races at the Knecht Cup April 12-13.

The highest finish for the women’s varsity program came in its heat for the Women’s Frosh/Novice Four, where the Raptors’ boat finished fourth out of five in a time of 8:53.6. The Lady Raptors were last in their other three heats, finishing fifth in the Women’s Varsity Eight Division III heat (8:29.7) and sixth in the other two heats for the Women’s Varsity Four Division III (9:34.0) and the Women’s Lightweight Four (9:11.2).

Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), sophomore stroke Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), freshman 7-seat Stacie Hagan (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), freshman 6-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), senior 5-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), junior 4-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI), sophomore 3-seat Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), senior 2-seat Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and freshman bow Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental).

Both the Lightweight Four and the Varsity Four boats included cox Sanchirico, stroke Fleming, 3-seat Negro, 2-seat Cheng and bow Arnold, while the Frosh/Novice Four featured cox Sanchirico, stroke Hagan, 3-seat Brandt, 2-seat Malony and bow Gontowski.

The men’s club team saw two boats race in the finals on Sunday, with the Men’s Frosh/Novice Eight Division II/III finishing second in a time of 7:06.8. That race was won by Hobart with a 6:25.1 clocking.

The other finalist was in the Men’s Varsity Eight Division II/III, where Rutgers-Camden was fourth of four teams at 7:21.3.

On Saturday, the Scarlet Raptors competed in heats for the Men’s Frosh/Novice Four, where they finished sixth of six teams in 8:55.0, and in the Men’s Varsity Four Division II/III, where they were fourth of six teams in 7:29.8.

The Varsity Four included cox Kendall, stroke Tontarski, 3-seat Carsillo, 2-seat Stelmaszyk and bow Ambrose. The Frosh/Novice Four featured cox Kendall, stroke Cavanaugh, 3-seat Cazales, 2-seat Roman and bow Bermingham.

Rutgers-Camden returns to racing on Saturday, April 26, when it competes in the Mid-Atlantic Division III Rowing Championships at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 6, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden Women’s Varsity Four+ boat finished third of five teams and the Lady Raptors’ Novice Four+ boat was second of three entries as the crew team competed in the Clark University Invite here Sunday.

Rutgers-Camden posted a time of 8:34.95 with its Varsity Four+ team to barely finish behind second-place Clark (8:34.05). Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) won the competition with a time of 7:56.43. Members of the Raptors’ boat were senior coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), sophomore stroke Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), freshman 3-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), senior 2-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and senior bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).

In the Novice Four+ race, the Lady Raptors posted a time of 9:44.77 to finish second behind WPI (8:50.91). Sanchirico was the coxswain, with sophomore stroke Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), 3-seat Malony, freshman 2-seat Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental) and junior bow Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI).

The men’s club program also competed in a pair of races, finishing second to Clark in the Varsity Four+ with a time of 7:40.2 and beating Clark to win the Novice Four+ competition in a time of 8:51.0.

The varsity boat included sophomore coxswain Melissa Kendall (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), sophomore stroke Nick Tontarski (Cedar Brook, NJ/St. Augustine), senior 3-seat Lance Carsillo (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), sophomore 2-seat Michael Ambrose (Deptford, NJ/St. Augustine) and freshman bow Jason Stelmaszyk (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West).

Members of the Novice Four included coxswain Kendall, sophomore stroke Jeff Bermingham (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional), junior 3-seat Efren Cazales (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), junior 2-seat Angel Roman (Camden, NJ/Leap Academy) and freshman bow Dan Boitel (Paramus, NJ/Bergen Catholic).

The Scarlet Raptors return to action next weekend when they row in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Pennsauken April 12-13.

PHILADELPHIA (March 29, 2008) – The Rutgers University-Camden women’s crew team competed in a pair of races and saw its Women’s Varsity Eight+ team finish third in the finals as the Lady opened their 2008 spring season in the Murphy Cup here Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

The Rutgers-Camden Women’s Varsity Eight+ boat finished third behind Carnegie Mellon and runnerup Bryn Mawr as the Raptors posted a time of 7:55.20. Members of the boat were senior coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), freshman stroke Stacie Hagan (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore 7-seat Kathleen Malony (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), senior 6-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), freshman 5-seat Tory Brandt (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore 4-seat Rachel Gontowski (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), junior 3-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI), freshman 2-seat Jacqueline Cheng (Hsinchu, Taiwan/National Experimental) and senior bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).

The Lady Raptors also finished last in their heat for the Women’s Varsity Four+ competition, placing fifth in a time of 8:32.00. Members of that boat were cox Sanchirico, stroke Hagan, 3-seat Brandt, 2-seat Fleming and bow Arnold.

The men’s club program also competed in a pair of races, finishing fourth of four teams in its two heats for the Men’s Varsity Four+ (7:25.82) and the Men’s JV Eight+ (6:56.05). The Varsity Four+ boat finished less than one second behind third-place Duquesne University.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sunday, April 6, when they compete in the Clark University Invite in Worcester, Massachusetts.
