Imani Hafiz

Name: Imani Hafiz
Hometown: Franklinville, NJ
Highschool: Delsea Regional
College Major: Economics
Position: Guard
Height: 5-5

Imani Hafiz will be chasing a number of milestones as a senior captain for the Lady Raptors.

Hafiz, who earned All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Honorable Mention during her junior season last winter, enters her senior campaign with 277 career steals, second on the all-time Lady Raptor list and only 68 shy of the program mark held by Tamara Carey (1991-95).

Hafiz also has a chance of becoming the 11th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, needing 327 to accomplish that feat. She scored 320 as a junior, when she led the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and collected 108 steals, the second-highest single-season total in program history. That total made her the first player in program history to record a pair of 100-steal seasons, following her 105 during the 2005-06 campaign. The 108 steals also placed Hafiz fourth nationally in Division III with 4.3 steals per game.

Hafiz is one of only three players in program history with more than 500 career points and 200 career steals. When she gets to 300 career steals, she’ll join only Carey in that exclusive club.

Hafiz started all 25 of her games last year, when she also averaged 5.9 rebounds (third on the team) and was second on the Lady Raptors with both 58 assists and 11 blocked shots. She earned team MVP honors and also captured the Samuel Strauss Memorial Award as the team’s Most Dedicated Player.

Hafiz finished second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in steals per game, seventh in scoring, 11th in assists per game (2.32), 12th in defensive rebounds per game (3.92), 14th in overall rebounding and 14th in minutes per game (29.36).

The quick guard started off the season with a bang, earning all-tournament team honors at the James P. Richardson Memorial Tip-Off Tournament (Nov. 17-18, 2006) at Lincoln University, when she collected 27 points, 15 rebounds, nine steals and five assists in a pair of games.

Hafiz had a season-high 10 steals against Eastern University (Nov. 28, 2006), when she also added 15 points for one of her two double-doubles of the season. Her other double-double came Feb. 7, 2007 at Rowan University when she notched 20 points, tied her career high of 13 rebounds and also set a career high of four blocked shots.

She notched a career-high nine assists against Richard Stockton College (Dec. 6, 2006).

Hafiz earned three honors as the school’s Raptor of the Week during the 2006-07 school year, capturing the award Jan. 29 and Feb. 12, and sharing it with teammate Carmen Oyola on Jan. 8. She also was named to the national d3hoops.com Team of the Week Feb. 1 after combining for 44 points, 15 rebounds, 12 steals and four assists in a pair of games against Kean University (Jan. 24) and Ramapo College (Jan. 27). In the Ramapo game, she went 8-for-14 from the field and 10-for-12 from the foul line to notch a career-high 26 points.

Overall, Hafiz had 18 games in double-digit scoring and notched 10 games with five or more steals.

During her sophomore season, Hafiz collected 105 steals, becoming one of only three Lady Raptor players to ever notch more than 100 steals in one season. Hafiz started 18 of her 24 games during the 2005-06 campaign, averaging 7.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.

In her two seasons with the basketball team, Hafiz already has 169 career steals, fifth on the program’s all-time list. She’s nearly halfway to the career mark of 345, held by Tamara Carey (1991-95).

Hafiz finished her sophomore season among the New Jersey Athletic Conference leaders in steals (second, 4.38 spg), assists (11th, 2.33 apg), free throw percentage (12th, 66.2) and rebounding (19th, 5.5 rpg). Her steals per game ranked her fourth nationally among all NCAA Division III players.

Eleven of Hafiz’s steals came against Montclair State University (Jan. 4, 2006), setting a single-game program record. She broke the mark of 10 set by Jennifer Hans against Old Westbury (Jan. 4, 1995) and tied by Joy Silver against William Paterson (Feb. 6, 2002).

Hafiz notched double-doubles in back-to-back games, with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Kean University (Jan. 14, 2006) and 13 points and 11 rebounds at William Paterson University (Jan. 18). Overall, she reached double figures in scoring in 10 of her 24 games, including a high of 20 against New Jersey City University (Feb. 15).

Her performance against Kean on Jan. 14, coupled with nine points, eight steals and five rebounds at New Jersey City (Jan. 11), helped Hafiz earn Raptor of the Week honors on Jan. 16.

Hafiz also had three double-digit games in rebounds during the season. Her most impressive performances, however, may have come with her defensive skills and her uncanny ability to collect steals. She had five or more steals in 11 games, and notched eight or more steals four times. One of those times came in a fine all-around performance against Lincoln University (Nov. 19) in which she had eight steals, eight points, four rebounds and her old career-high of eight assists.

Overall, Hafiz finished second on the team in assists, fourth in both scoring and rebounding, and first in steals.

Hafiz also was one of the Lady Raptors’ top foul shooters, going 51-for-77 (.662) from the charity stripe, including 10-for-10 over her last two games. She went 6-for-6 from the foul line twice last season, coming against The College of New Jersey (Feb. 1) and William Paterson (Feb. 18).

During her freshman season, Hafiz played in 20 games as a Lady Raptor guard, making seven starts, and led the club with 64 steals. Her average of 3.2 steals per game placed her third in the NJAC and tied for 41st in the nation among all Division III players. She finished 24th in the NJAC in scoring (8.9 ppg) and 14th in offensive rebounds (2.35 rpg).

Hafiz scored five points and added two steals and one assist in her collegiate debut against Houghton College (Nov. 19, 2004) at the Wingate Invitational. In the consolation game against Wilkes University the next day, Hafiz had seven rebounds, one assist, two blocked shots, two steals and her first double-digit scoring output, notching 13 points.

Hafiz exploded for eight points and four rebounds during a 16-3 overtime run as the Lady Raptors edged Ramapo College, 62-49, Dec. 4 in Mahwah. She finished with six rebounds, four steals and the eight overtime points.

Making her first career start, Dec. 11 at Lehman College, Hafiz had nine rebounds, 14 points, one assist, two blocks and seven steals, at the time a career high.

Hafiz earned a spot on the Craig Keeler Memorial all-tournament team at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Jan. 7-8, 2005. She had her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds during a 68-66 loss to the Apprentice School (Jan. 7). She notched eight rebounds, five steals, three assists and a career-high 22 points the next day in a 70-53 consolation win over Lincoln University.

Hafiz was named Raptor of the Week on Jan. 24, 2005 after she notched 13 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and six assists in games against St. Mary’s (Jan. 17) and William Paterson (Jan. 19). She also was the Raptor of the  Week on Feb. 21 after notching 14 points, six rebounds, one block and four steals in the Raptors’ final game at William Paterson (Feb. 19).

Her lightning-quick speed and all-around ability have served Hafiz well in other sports as well. One day after finishing her second season on the basketball court for Rutgers-Camden, Hafiz switched gears and made her indoor track debut at the NJAC Championships (Feb. 19, 2006). She scored 12 of the Lady Raptors’ 19 points as they finished in a tie for fifth place. Hafiz set Rutgers-Camden indoor program records in the 55-meter dash (7.60) and the triple jump (33-9.25), earning All-NJAC Second Team honors in the triple jump with her second-place finish. She also finished fourth at 55 meters.

That performance was just a warmup for an incredible outdoor track season in 2006. At the NJAC Championships on May 6, Hafiz finished second in the triple jump (10.95 meters) and ran on a pair of Lady Raptor relay teams, finishing second in the 4x400 (4:17.19) and third in the 4x100 (50.11). Those results helped her earn All-NJAC Second Team in both the triple jump and 4x400, in addition to All-NJAC Honorable Mention in the 4x100.

Hafiz made an impressive outdoor track debut during the spring 2005 season, competing in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, the long jump, high jump, triple jump and 4x100 relay. She set the school triple jump record of 36-7.75 at the ECAC Championships (May 20) and she also ran on the record-setting 4x100 team (48.13) at the Spiked & Psyched Last Chance Meet (May 18). She earned All-NJAC Second Team honors in both the triple jump and the 4x100 relay.

Hafiz also earned a varsity letter as a member of the Lady Raptors’ 2005 cross country team.

A three-year basketball and track captain at Delsea Regional High School, Hafiz also played soccer for the Crusaders, amassing 11 varsity letters overall (four apiece in basketball and track and three in soccer). She earned Second Team Tri-County Conference Royal Division honors as a sophomore in basketball, earned MVP honors in basketball (twice) and track, and was named Most Improved Player (twice) and Tri-County Conference Royal Division Honorable Mention in soccer.

As a track standout at Delsea, she captured the Group 3 state championship in the triple jump and won the Gloucester County championship in the triple jump and placed in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. As a senior, Hafiz was named as a First Team All-Area track star by the Gloucester County Timesand was the triple jumper on the Courier-Post’s First Team All-Group 3 and Second Team All-South Jersey track squads. She also earned Second Team Tri-County Conference Royal Division honors in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Honorable Mention Tri-Co Royal for the high jump. She broke school records in the 100, 200, 400, high jump, triple jump and sprint medley at Delsea.

Hafiz attended high school in Georgia during her junior year, when she finished fifth in the state as a long jumper and won a state championship on the 4x400 relay team.

An Economics major at Rutgers-Camden, Imani is the daughter of Fatima Hafiz and Rasool Wahid of Franklinville.
