It won’t take Carmen Oyola long to hit a career milestone this season.

Oyola, who collected 223 points in her first season at Rutgers-Camden last winter, scored 736 during her fine two-year career at Cumberland County College. She needs only 41 points to score her 1,000th collegiate point.

In her first season with the Lady Raptors, Oyola finished third on the team in scoring (8.9 ppg), averaged 3.1 rebounds and added 33 steals and 30 assists. She finished 24th in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with her 8.9 scoring average.

Oyola also was one of the Raptors’ most accurate shooters from the foul line, hitting 44 of 60 shots (73.3 percent) to finish second on the team in free throw percentage.

Oyola hit double figures in scoring eight times last season, including her first game as a Lady Raptor, when she went 5-for-8 from the floor on the way to 15 points in a season-opening victory against Washington College (Nov. 17). Her layup with 1:28 remaining helped Rutgers-Camden wrap up a 53-52 win.

Oyola’s finest performance came at the Diversified Invitational Jan. 5-6 at the University of Scranton. She scored 11 points in the opening game against Scranton and collected a career-high 17 in the consolation game win over Goucher College the next day, on her way to earning a berth on the all-tournament team. She added six rebounds, two assists and three steals in the two games. Her performance helped her share the school’s Raptor of the Week honor on Jan. 8 with teammate Imani Hafiz.

Oyola came to Rutgers-Camden after a record-breaking career at Cumberland County College in which she set the Dukes’ all-time scoring record with 736 points. She was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Second Team All-American following her sophomore season in 2005-06. She also earned First Team Region 19 honors. She finished among the NJCAA Div. III national leaders in scoring (15.7 ppg, 23rd nationally) and free throw percentage (74.4, 20th). She also averaged 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals, while shooting 163-for-368 (44.3) in field goals. She had five 20-point games, including 28 against Bergen Community College (Jan. 5, 2006) and 27 against Salem (Nov. 22, 2005). During a 20-point game against the County College of Morris (Jan. 21, 2006), Oyola went 13-for-17 from the foul line. She notched five games in double digits rebounding, including 13 against Montgomery College (Nov. 12). She was named the Garden State Athletic Conference Division III Player of the Year and also was honored as the EOF Student of the Year.

As a freshman during the 2003-04 season, she earned the EOF Josephine Lockett Scholarship and also averaged 13.0 points, 4.6 rebounds. She had a pair of 24-point games against Middlesex (Jan. 31) and Passaic (Feb. 26), and also had a double-double in the second battle against Middlesex (Feb. 24), notching 19 points and 10 rebounds.

For her 51-game Cumberland County College career, Oyola averaged 14.4 points, had 282 rebounds (5.5 rpg), 70 assists and 74 steals.

Oyola was a four-year basketball letterwinner at Hammonton High School, where she played for Coach Tom Inzillo. She was a Cape-Atlantic League American Division Second Team player during her senior year.

A Spanish major at Rutgers-Camden, Carmen is the daughter of Carmen Olivera of Hammonton.
