Rory
Thornton played in all of Rutgers-Camden’s
25 games during his first year of collegiate
basketball, while developing into one of the
Scarlet Raptors’ starting guards. After
coming off the bench in his first nine contests,
Thornton started the remaining 16 games. He
averaged 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and finished
second on the team with 41 assists. He also
added 24 steals, two blocked shots, and hit
74.3 percent of his foul shots, going 26-for-35
from the line.
Over
his final 12 games, Thornton collected all
five of his double-digit games in scoring,
including a pair of 12-point games against
Rowan (Jan. 10) and Rutgers-Newark (Jan. 20)
to establish his career highs. He added five
rebounds in the Rowan game, setting a career
high that he also tied against both The College
of New Jersey (Feb. 15) and Kean (Feb. 17).
One of Thornton’s top games
came late in the season at Eastern University (Feb. 5), when he scored 10 points,
had three rebounds, notched a career high with five assists and tied his high
of three steals, which was set against Baptist Bible College (Dec. 12).
Thornton earned a pair of varsity
basketball letters at Union High School, where he played for Head Coach Anthony
Zioloro. His accomplishments at Union included career-high performances of 30
points and nine assists. He also posted a 3.2 GPA and earned several academic
scholarships.
