Joshua
Askew played a key role in the Rutgers-Camden
men’s basketball program as a freshman,
starting 21 of his 25 games, while leading
the Raptors with 59 steals and 50 assists.
The quick point guard also tied for fourth
on the team with a 7.7 scoring average, while
chipping in 2.3 rebounds per game.
Askew’s 59 steals were the sixth-highest
single-season mark in program history and helped him finish second in the New
Jersey Athletic Conference and 50th nationally in Division III in steals per
game (2.36).
It
didn’t take Askew long to make an impact
in collegiate basketball, earning NJAC Rookie
of the Week honors on Nov. 27 after collecting
a career-high 16 points in the Raptors’ 93-77
victory over Valley Forge Christian College
Nov. 21, 2006. He went 7-for-8 from the floor,
including 2-for-3 from three-point range,
added three rebounds, three steals and two
assists in that game as the Scarlet Raptors
raised their record to 2-1. That marked the
first time the program had been over .500
since ending the 2001-02 season at 14-11.
Askew later tied
his 16-point performance against Elizabethtown College (Dec. 16), when he also
added a career-high six steals. For the season, he notched five games with
four or more steals, and hit double-digits in scoring on 11 occasions.
In addition to his pair of 16-point
games, Askew notched 14 points against Rutgers-Newark (Jan. 20).
An accurate shooter from the foul
line, Askew went 45-for-64 (70.3 percent) from the charity stripe, second only
to Dane Nicholson (75.0) among all Scarlet Raptors with 50 or more attempts
from the line.
Askew was a basketball letterman
for Head Coach Chris Martin at Winslow Township High School, where he also
was a National Honor Society student.
A Business Management major at Rutgers-Camden,
Joshua is the son of Jerome Askew of Sicklerville.
