A transfer from Virginia Wesleyan College, where he didn’t play ball, Michael Kondrath appeared in seven games last spring out of the Rutgers-Camden bullpen. He wo
rked 9-1/3 innings, posting an 0-1 record and a 6.75 ERA. He walked four and struck out eight.
Kondrath made his collegiate debut against Haverford College March 1, working one inning and allowing three hits and two runs, one of them unearned. He collected all three outs on strikeouts.
Kondrath pitched against some of the top teams in the country last season, facing five clubs in his seven outings that appeared in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III national poll. He hurled a scoreless inning against Johns Hopkins University (March 11, second game), a team that finished the season ranked No. 12 nationally. He also worked a scoreless inning against the College of New Jersey (April 20), a club which peaked at No. 4 nationally and finished No. 14.
Kondrath’s longest outing of the season was a three-inning stint against Montclair State University in the nightcap of an April 7 doubleheader. He allowed six hits and seven runs in that outing, with three of the runs being unearned. He walked two and struck out two against the Red Hawks, who peaked at No. 10 nationally in 2007. Facing another New Jersey Athletic Conference power, Rowan University, on April 26, Kondrath worked 2-1/3 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs, while striking out one. He took the loss in that game against the Profs, who peaked at No. 27 nationally a year ago.
Kondrath earned three varsity baseball letters at Holy Cross High School in Delran, helping the Lancers reach the state Parochial A finals during his junior season in 2004. That year he tossed a five-inning complete game as Holy Cross clinched the Burlington County League Freedom Division championship. He posted a 4-1 record in seven games, suffering his only loss coming despite pitching a one-hitter. He had 25 strikeouts and only eight walks in 33-1/3 innings.
Kondrath also accomplished a unique feat during summer ball when he struck out seven batters in two innings due to one batter reaching base on a third-strike passed ball. He had four strikeouts that inning.
Kondrath enjoys hanging out and playing sports with his Raptor teammate Scott Fruits.
A Business Management major at Rutgers-Camden, Michael is the son of Edward and Ellen Kondrath of Medford Lakes.
